Hi Guys,

I hope you're all having a relaxing Sunday.

I'm currently studying my level 1 C&G 7202 in Bedford, 1 day a week.

I have been trying hard to find entry level electrical work without success; Whenever an electrician hears that I'm only on a level 1 course, they cut the conversation short saying they will get back to me. One guy did actually get back to me, only to say that he wishes me all the best but that he hired a Level 3 instead.

Therefore I decided to get myself an ECS laborer card, to open up my opportunities. Unfortunately they have changed the rules, so now I can't get the card unless I'm already employed... but I can't get employed on site without the card.

Quote directly from the ECS website:
"From 1st October 2017 proof of employment by an Electrical Contractor or other Electrotechnical employer will be required for initial applications for the Electrical Labourer card."

Why is it so difficult just to get some experience and a foot in the door, has anyone else had similar problems starting out in the industry?

I had the same issue. Just get a cscs labourer card instead.
Thanks Drew, I might try that. Have you had any trouble using it though? Has anyone insisted that you have an ECS?

I've had no issue with it. Look online at jobs and a lot will ask for either. Best thing i found was doing an asbestos awareness test online. Cost me £25. Also if you can get your IPaf card. It's a day course and cost me £150 and lasts for 5 years. Keep trying and good luck

I always just assumed that the job ads said 'CSCS' because the recruitment agencies were making a mistake! There's a LearnDirect Training centre in my town which offers CSCS cards. I've never heard of an IPaf card, I'd rather not dish out on £150 for something I might never need or use :S

if you are just trying to get into house bashing then you won't need the Ipaf but if not then it's a must. Google it mate see what you think
