LAP is just a cheap make of accessory normally supplied from Screwfix - unless I have mis-read your post.
Dimmer switches have different characteristics dependant on the particular load.
Can you post images?

As above LAP is a poor quality inferior product which is a home brand of Screwfix. Generally not used by professionals.

to answer the question specifically, it differs from a normal dimmer in that its made to the lowest possible price.

As above - cheap and nasty and we will not fit - even if supplied by client because we know we will get called back and blamed for it not working proper

I would normally try to get the VARILIGHT ones, they also work tolerably well with most dimmable LED lights.

(Generally to get good dimming for LED stuff you need to have the fancy 0-10V controlled ones, not had the pleasure of using that for myself though).
