Hi,
im trying to find out whats the best qualifications i need to become an electrician. I'm leaving the Royal Navy in Dec 12 (Petty Officer Weapon Engineer Technician) after 23 yrs. I've got 2 City and Guilds in electrical engineering and a Foundation Degree in the same but don't know if these are any good in civvy street. I've worked most of my career on electrical weapon systems on warships. Could anyone advise me on what courses i could do to get my foot in the door of your fine trade, also i'll be 40 when i leave, is this to old to get started?? Hope someone can help.

Welcome to the forum! The course to do would be city & guilds 2357; it's quite an expensive course, but will be a lot cheaper for you if the navy pay for it.

Hi
As said you're never too old but with your qualifications wouldn't you prefer the engineering route? If you're in the south would recommend LSBU and top up your foundation degree. Another option would be a shore job in engineering with someone like BP Marine. Good luck.

Hello wiggywiggins I think you've been at sea to long to not hear that 40 is the new 60!

Maximum respect to you, for the past 23 years.

I suspect you would know far more than most already. In fact I'm going to stick my neck out now, a shortER course is probably perfectly suited to an individual like you. What do others think?

As someone mentioned if you can get it as part of the "relocation" I'd do it

{fix bayonets!}

Hi mate and welcome.

i too am Ex forces (many years ago). At 40 i would run with the quals that you already have, and get some job applications sent out. Ex forces at any age are highly employable, and that fact alone on you CV will get you a good few interviews. I can give you an example a couple of years ago, i got a call from an agency who wanted to place me in a full time well paid job. i got offered it over the phone and without an interview. When i enquired about not having an interview, his reply was "Our client has seen Royal Air Force on your CV and he says that, that is good enough for him". I was 47 at the time, and had been out of the mob for 20 years, at the time i had taken voluntary redundancy from the worlds largest soft drinks manufacturer, and only had ONC Electrical Engineering to my name.

I didnt accept the job, i went and worked for myself.

Good luck,

Howard

Fellas,
the navy's is giving me a couple of grand to do some retraining for civvy street (resettlement). i was thinking 17th edition and part P, they seem to be the ones that everybody goes on about (what do you think)? i,m certainly using all the money(navy's had its pound of flesh from me).
regards

Where are you based? Are you looking for pointers as to where to do the training?

I'm guessing that Portsmouth is your "base" in the Navy rather than your home town.

The 2391 inspection and testing or its new equivelent would open many doors if coupled with your existing quals
Handy piece of paper indeed if you go maintenance, installing or testing

Welcome to you
