Welcome to the forum. 40 is young! I retrained in 2010 after being made redundant and after having done a very different job for over 30 years. I was 54 at the time and even then wasn't the oldest person doing the training. I'm sure your background will be a huge help to you. Good luck with your plans.

Hey mate,

I'm the same as you, (almost). Army just been made volantry Redundant.

I've done the Basic Electrics course, Domestic Electrical Instilation, 17th Edition and in Jan im on Inspection and testing and PAT testing! your resettlement will pay for the majority of it. Maybe be below what your looking for but something to look into. im sure with your back ground you would **** it! check out the CTP web sight. cost me around £1200 with exams but on civy street would be around £8000.

Good Luck To You!!!

Wiggy!

welcome to the world of resettlement! funny world it is as its some thing you never thought would come to you!

Leaving the navy as you know will be mentally and physically challanging! and trust me i only did 7 Years before medical board at INM kicked me out for injury i sustained.
after 23 years i can imagine the Mental aspect will be very hard to deal with if you dont get occupied quickly with a new job or set up your self..! i will openly admit that for the first year after leaving the navy i suffered depression from not been with the people i know and trust and from been forced top leave a career i enjoyed and lived for.

My advice... Use your NVQ 3 tickets in engineering obtain the 2391 Inspection Ticket and get 17th Edition.

I did a BTEC Level 3 electrical inatallation course that covers the exact same side of the college 2357 course for a fraction of the price as it is all theory (hands on stuff i did in navy any way)

dont waste resettlement money on PAT Testing or Part P courses they are stupid things! although the SLC may be handy for the PAT testing if you want it.

get your ELC credits and enroll on a HNC in Engineering subject to top up your skill set. long drawn out route but brilliant prospects at end.

and another thing you will already know is general CIVVY's are idiots! they don't like you going to work drunk, hate racist / sexist remarks.. you cant get your willy out at work, doing the elephant will get you sacked and walking around with your female boss with your nads hanging out the zipper will land you in jail...! oh on plus side you can ring in sick with out been seen my a medic or gettting a PMO to send you home and if your late for work they cant fine you and make you look like a **** but they can enrol you on the Job centre dole q.

Durhamsparky,
Haha, that last bit made me laugh. 2391 and 17th edition seem like the ones everyone is quoting (l'll look into doing these). i need to get my a$*e into gear, been away most of last year so haven't been able to start any resettlement yet.
regards
wiggy
ps i'm having intense training on how to behave as a normal person and not a matelot.

all depends on your definition of normal. there's more weirdos in civvy st. than the navy, mate.

and they aint all up north, either.
