notice i didnt say "suitable outside"

rather than me buying a drum of external cat6, running it between house and shed, with an outlet socket at each end and a couple of short patch leads for the modem and computer end..... can i just use cat5e with rj45 terminations directly, but cover it with something.. or thread it through pipe on the higher risk areas of the route?

The route is around 30m... along a brick wall, under the path (or between the slabs) ... along a fence and into the shed... Its a posh shed with a gaming pc set up inside... and the wifi isnt quite up to scratch.

I have 2 boxes of regular CAT5e in stock and a bag of terminations....... i do not have any external CAT6...

Is it a bodge.... or is it a solution for the customer that doesn't want to spend a great deal.

In my experience it will go brittle quite quickly with Uv and temperature fluctuations!
If it's going to be in conduit it should be fine.

Definitely stick it in some tubing.

Ok gotcha…

So does cat6 external come in boxes less than 305m?

External in the elements will see it perish pretty quick. Conduit would help

There are places that sell external grade by the metre or short lengths. Quick Google search should find them. TLC are quite local to me so they are my 'go to' when after something like that.

I hadn’t really looked far into it… being sold by the metre…

Just CEF, who only have it in the 305m box.

When I have done similar, it has taken 2 to 3 years before problems have surfaced.
Ps that earth at home!

When you look at the per metre cost it is a lot cheaper to buy a 50m or 100m drum, if you are running external CAT5 is is extremely rare to only need 5 or 10 metres

Thanks Ben.

I’ve not been called back, so I guess my quote was too much. They will just struggle on over Wi-Fi I think.

I still have that spool to eventually get round to running a line outside
Main challenge is doing it neatly haha
