After reading a post on here the other day about B&Q offering the CU and install for £425 I thought I would go in and speak to the manager to see if I could offer a similar scheme down here, I have noticed over the last few weeks my local store (only a very small store) is selling loads of the £55 CUs.

When I spoke to the manager (young female in 30s), apart from telling me that it has to go through Head Office she said that in her opinion that store would not recommend anyone use an electrician to install a CU because installing one is as easy as wiring up a plug! I was discussed!

She then informed me that she installed hers 2 years ago, my reaction is who signed it off - noone! So I asked does it work ok - had a few problems so I had to remove the trips (RCDs), made me even more discussed - I left with asking her why upgrade the CU if your going to remove components from it and end up with a product that is no different than the one that got taken out!

I found out from the girl on the till that that store sells around 50 per week (and that's a small store!)

What the hell is going on here!

You will never ever ever stop DIY Electrical work, and your wasting your time trying, it's not illegal to do it it any dwelling in the uk, that's the problem, illegal not to notify yes, but have you ever heard of prosecution due to not notification.....nope, i don't mind saying if I come across a situation where I have to rectify bad DIY electrical, I charge more

My guess is that lots of them are bought by sparkies and builders.
no doubt about it Mur....and why not n all....BG boards..good....
look, anyone can go installin in their own properteis for me......and you just know that about 70% of it will go arse up...lol....then the phone rings....

Why buy from a "trade" wholesaler when the nearest shed is cheaper!

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, but surely any idiot should know that if take/bypass important parts then its defeating the purpose. If its as easy as wiring a plug then it should have worked perfectly.

It's like me saying I recently changed the brakes on my van. Got the discs in ok but couldn't get the pads to fit so took them out of it. No ones dead yet so it was easy

I wouldn't believe a word of it either. Sounds like she is just talking out of her back end. There's no way she did what she said she did! Lying cow!

You say that I did a nabour's shed the other day after seeing it - 10mm SWA wired into the load side of the RCD to supply the CU. He said he did it like that 4 years back because he could not get the RCD to stop tripping - he only put the N in the N bar and L in the L of the RCD - complete unbalance - of course the RCD would trip!

Only took 2 minutes to sort
