Hi, could anyone answer a couple of questions for me; Is a like for like shower replacement (same wattage) Notifiable? I have read that it is a minor works? I think it says in approved doc p that its not notifiable?? Also, if I put a shower in on a like for like basis, given that the original installation predates the requirement for RCD protection, can it go in without an rcd if all other things (disconnection time, supplimentary bonding etc ) are in order?? cheers.

Just put up a thread on notifiable works , yes it would be a minor works because you will have to disconnect the supply to the shower to replace it , and one of the reasons you test it after is to ensure that the circuit is safe and issue a minor works cert to prove that it is

Thank you sir for sharing your expertise with a lowly beginner. So from what i read on the sheet above, a like for like change of a shower is not notifiabe. I have learned more on this site in one hour than i have spending a week wading through books. Thank you to wire puller for his help

if manufacture states rcd this over rule any regs and most do so like for like is not normaly possible when it comes to showers with no rcd

Really?.....I dont think manufacturers can insist on RCD protection, only recommend.....I recently was on a job where the new stainless sink had in big letters on the box WARNING,THIS SINK MUST BE EARTHED...shows what manufacturers know.

i agree with wirepuller on this one , manufacturers take there installation methods etc from the regs and always state they should be installed in accordance to the current wiring regs,

I reckon this is down to good practise rather than regulations. You could argue that this is a like for like replacement and therefore not notifiable, and no MEIWC needs to be completed. But I think most good sparks would want to add RCD protection without thinking twice about it. My interpretation is that this would then need an EIC and notification.

The supply for the shower runs through a fused spur situated in the airing cupboard, my plan was to exchange this with a 30ma rcd fused spur. As the original installation is around 20 years old, i thought this would a cost effective way of making things safer. I dont think that the customer would be prepared to pay for a new cu
