Hi all

About to take on a rewire and my memory has gone a little fuzzy.

Are there any regs regarding socket and light switch heights. It's an existing property with an extension going up as I type. So technically not a new build.

The height regulations only apply to new build premises and not re-wires. However if you are adding an extension this would be classed as a new build and any electrical points placed within that part of the building would fall under the requirement for regulation heights.

It often depends on the building inspector, most don't care but if you are rewiring the whole house I'd put them all in at the heights stated for new builds

I would keep all the same as existing but 450mm to the bottom of socket and 1200mm to the centre of switch

Hi Rattle. That's not how I read it re extensions. Have you had problems with BC to state this?

Ref for my reply. Approved Doc M Section 0 General Guidance. Pg 11 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4

agree with davey. extension to existing building you put them at the height the client wants them, within reason.

Thought DOC M was between 450 & 1200mm not the centre of the switch. I'm pretty sure you can also comply with another British Standard BS8300 with heights between 400 & 1200 if the inspector is a bit fussy. Have a search on google for it.

Not if building control are involved, they will make you comply with the building regs whether your paying or not.
