Hiya,

I've just fitted a kitchen light fitting and went from a ceiling rose with many connections to something with just a live, neutral and earth.

I took the three brown wires that were together (labelled loop in the old fitting) and joined them all together in a connector block - I think thats so far, so good... Next I took the two blue wires that were together (labelled neutral in the old fitting) and joined those together in a connector. In addition to those there was an extra blue wire and an extra brown wire which were in terminals on their own that went directly to the connectors adjoining the bulb socket itself.... these I've put into the L and N terminals on the new light.

The light itself works, and is the first light on the loop as it's right next to the CU - none of the other lights on the loop are working.

I have a feeling the browns are all correct (and the earths obviously lol)..... I have a feeling that the two blues need combined with the other blue that I've put into the neutral terminal. Does that sound right? Three blues together?

Incidentally, this light has two independent switches.

I've not blown any fuses up, or myself :) Going from this info, does anyone know what I might need to do next to get my other lights back on? Do I just need to have all three blues together?

you need to get an electrician in with the equipment to ID/test the cables and connect them up. simple job, not expensive. post your location, one of us may be close.

You have left the lighting in a dangerous condition as all the fittings will likely be live but not working as it sounds like you have disconnected the neutral to the remaining lights, although I cannot be sure without seeing the original wiring and current wiring.

You should originally have had a standard ceiling rose like this

but your switched live may not have been blue sleeved brown, you need to maintain the same arrangement of connections, if you are at all unsure how they were arranged then take Telectrix's good advice.
Do not risk your life in getting it wrong.

Hiya,

The original rose had one neutral to the flex/lamp and the other two neutrals together. I've since examined the old light fitting and whilst the isolated neutral and two seperated neutrals seemed to be distinctly seperate, on further inspection they are actually joined so problem solved.

Thanks for your help and feedback anyway, all working and fine now.

Cheers,

Rob

Glad it is all working, thank you for letting us know how it turned out.
It is always difficult to determine a wiring arrangement from a distance.

I totally understand. I run a pretty huge forum myself and never appreciate those that cut and run :)

Thanks again :)
