lenny one more question pls.I HAVE 3-LEADS COMEING OUT FROM MY MEGGER,looking at the one way switch for the lighting i can see brown-com switchwire-L2 and earth CNNECTED TO THE META LBOX,MY Q IS WHERE DO THE 3-LEADS FROM THE MEGGER GO TO.

No offence baazab but by the sounds of it you don't seem competent enough to be messing about on a live installation.

Sorry mate, for a 3 lead test with the megger you need to test at a point on the circuit that has a neutral ie. the light fitting or rose.
The green lead connects to the earth the black lead connects to the neutral and the red lead connects to the switched line.

Sintra thanks for that information,so you saying you cant do zs from a one way switch, pls correct me if i understand you wrong

As my esteemed colleague has said in order for 'no trip' test with an MFT you need a neutral present. With only L&E present you can only use the high current loop test function.

Again Page 4 of the link I posted shows this.

Not on a circuit that is RCD protected and has no neutral in the switch. For an RCD protected circuit you have to use the no trip setting on the meter and 3 leads which means you need a connection to neutral.

If the circuit is not RCD protected then use the high setting with 2 leads (red & green) connected to line and cpc in this case it could be tested at the switch.

Hi Baazab, make sure you use the supplied little plastic shrouds that go over your test leads when doing any live testing very important for preventing interesting flashes and bangs and would probs mean a fail in a practical exam.

Your tester will read trip if you momentarilly lose contact with the earth connection , which on the meggar1553 is easily done if you testing at a lighting pendent because those leads are about 4 inches to short if you don't use steps and if your doing a no trip rcd test on a lighting circuit it almost becomes a two man job !

I have just bought one of these I will let you know if they pan out well, surely a tad easier than holding probes ?

Liking the kit there Steve.

Im getting more and more tempted, along with my new tester i am thinking of purchasing:)

Indeed its a possibility.

Only reason being, is that i havent bought anything at all this tax year :D

i got a set of those as well off ebay a few weeks ago - really fancied the yellow/orange socket and see ones but they were £16 dearer. bound to lose those dark lightmate ones in the bottom of my bag :o

I've got the 1553 it seduced me with the two lead options and Blue Tooth, doubt I will ever use the BT though it seems a ball ache, it has taken me ages to get used to the Meggar the dials aren't the best or clearest, I had Kewteck singles before but the RCD tester though claiming to be non- trip doesn't now work with modern RCD's as I think the new RCD's are more dc sensitive and I think the old Kewteck used to send a dc pulse down to annoy the RCD long enough to do the test, but not sure on that
