Last night, all of my outlets in my family room were working just fine. This morning, however, I discovered all the outlets that had something plugged in no longer work. I checked the breakers and all is fine. It’s just odd the one outlet that doesn’t have anything still works. We did have a couple storms roll through but that was all while I was watching TV and it was working. The TV is on a surge protector but the others were not. What could the problem be?

All the breakers are on and staying on, yes? Do any of the affected outlets contain a GFCI, and if so, do the test and reset buttons work? Are there any GFCI outlets nearby* that might have tripped, but not been noticed?

If nothing is tripped then it is quite likely that there is a failed connection at the first outlet along the circuit that doesn't work, or the last one that does. The fact that the outlet that is still operational didn't have anything plugged in at the time, may be just a coincidence.

*UK readers note that the OP is in the US, where GFCI receptacles have extra terminals on the load side of the GFCI that can be used to protect ordinary outlets downstream. Therefore one tripped GFCI point that may not itself have been in use, can disable multiple other points.
