Discuss can anyone clarify this in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

G

glasgospark

scotland
mostly glasgow , new installs including loft conversions, garage conversions new build extensions etc etc

does the electrician HAVE to be niceic ,select etc registered ???

im giving away far to much work due to the fact im not registered yet

I've tested & worked on these types of install and not had any problems.

Usually a council is only interested in a certificate to cover themselves in event of a fault.

Most of these folk on these councils haven't any clue with regards to electrical install

When my own loft was getting quoted for a loft specialist stated that I had to be registered with select to sign off the work.

His quote was 16k , turned him down and got it dun for 3k. Wired it myself, inc network and tv cables.!!

The council's around my way say only niceic registered sparks , does my head in

Actually your council is breaking the law and like sheep seem to follow English law plus it gives them more power. Edinburgh District Council cover their butts and will accept certification by "Enquiry" this means that you have to put a front and back copy of your SJIB card and a copy of your testers current calibration certificate.

Funny thing is if you are Select or NICEIC registered you only have to put your registration number on the cert so thats ok is'nt it ? Well no I hear there was a problem on a job and the guy was asked for his qualifications and tester calibration turns out the cal doc and the quals certs were "mislaid" but that was ok cos he was using his mates reg number. Deary Dear at least with you someone said we are guaranteed that your documentation is in order.
Forgot to add that he had been "trading" for years and nobody ever thought of doing a spot check so who do you think would be liable on this ie him ? His Scheme provider ? his customer he subs to ? or the local council for not doing due dilligence ?

So when your local council asks or demands Select/NICEIC registration ask them if this complies with the European Free Trade Act and are they happy to compensate you for descrimination

The job in question is Edinburgh ,
the bigger picture I have had to turn down about 20k worth because councils ask for niceic

Going to get on the phone tomorrow , put my foot down

I do the test sheets myself off the IEE site. Even thou I'm going to be a NICEIC qualified supervisor soon with my employer it seems that the full electrical trade in Britain is in need of a clearer clarification of the rules.!

Yet again urban myths and individuals within the council sadly in this current economical environment where people think they have a bit O power.

If they are insisting on this then request that they put it formally in writing to you as my understanding is by "Enquiry" was to cover this because the law says you are qualified/ insured/registered with HMRC so you are a legal trader

dont you get sick n tired of hearing time n time again `NIC only`....
some of these council guys that insist on this are a bunch of chimps....
if they think the NIC is better than anyone else they should take a look in PE`s caught on camera month by month...plenty of them horror shows are by NIC registered folk...

Thats why I am beginning to despair its like the PAT game and it is a game where urban myth is allowed to run free because no one will put down in black and white what is required

This is the document ALL Scottish councils should be working to. It clarify's the situation and explains the "By enquiry" route. Dont let them tell you otherwise, and as has been already stated ask for written confirmation if they do. If they put it in writing they are breaking the law.

Upload didnt work. copy and paste this scotland.gov.uk/Resource/Doc/217736/0092252.pdf

I did a rewire ( went through labc) they sent someone out to "Inspect" my work. His next question was " I thought you can't run a cable diagonally, I said I haven't, he was talking about the fact the cooker outlet was directly under the cooker isolator. Needless to say there want many questions asked after that, as he said to me the only training he had had was the course the council had put him on for an afternoon to be able to do the job

Chris, you are joking?!
Manchester charge over £300 to send an 'Engineer' out to I&T any work.
If that's all they are, the phrase containing rope, up and go, springs to mind!

Thanks skysparky it does get frustrating when theses clowns take matters into their own hands just to weiled a bit of power but at the same time blows a hole through this Scheme nonsense don't get me wrong I have a lot of time for Select but because Scotland is not allowed a monopoly then the biggest mistake was letting NICEIC in with their sales driven tacticts as I mentioned previously because the Scheme is not policed it allows the chancers to work the system by putting a scheme number at the top of the sheet of course there is an easy way to stop this by getting the LABC to do a spot check and ask for calibration certs and qualifications
