Evening all,

Help needed did a Recent CU change, 15th edition install, inaccessible junction boxes on RFC with a FCU down rated to 3 amp feeding a bathroom fan. FCU is inaccessible (I needed to find out if it has been fused down bathroom lino up and floor boards) all tested out ok too.

What I need to understand is this compliant to 17th edition on a CU change. I Know it's not accessible, but is fused accordingly. Rcbo for that circuit could be used as means of isolation of fan if it is noted at the board. Am I right in thinking this?

a FCU that is inaccessible is a big no no. find it, drag it out, and make it accessible. who in their right mind would fit a FCU where you can't get to it?

I would move it as you have a golden opportunity and believe it comes into local isolation

It is stupid, been like that for 2o years or more with no problems. Am I responsable for that very stupid arrangement on a cu change thou?

Now, if there are issues with an installation that are not considered unsafe, although not to current BS, (unearthed lighting circuits excluded), you ARE NOT generally required to put these right, although they should be noted on the cert in the correct box.

It would be a pig of a problem if Terry the tiler comes and tiles the floor and then the fuse blows, no chance of changing it then. I wouldn't say you're responsible as you've only changed the cu but it would be worth telling them it needs moving

So you've changed the CU, note it on the cert. There are millions of homes in the UK with similar issues.

Thanks for all your replies, I ask as I had my Assesment Monday just gone and got a Non confirmity for this arrangement. Obviously after further investigation it had been down rated, stupidly but not unsafe. Lesson learnt, more investigation needed before changing the cu.

I shall note on cert Murdoch, thank you.

I really love this site, better than FB. Lol.

Is there? I'm on Facebook, never noticed any!

It might be "working fine" now but it won't be if and when the fuse blows and you can't get to it to replace it.
