Faulty electrical meter?

Since last week I notice my Ampy meter was flashing 88888 and usage red light flicking continuously, even when main consumer main box turned off for over an hour. Still remained the same. Ive contacted the supplier last week will be sending an engineer.
But today i noticed that the meter was totally off - blank screen and no flashing usage light. Note all main electricity was on and working. l observed the meter for about 5 minutes, Then meter started flicker again and flashing 88888.

What could be the possible causes of this ? Any advice

The meter has failed, it most likely won't be recording the usage, however it may be recording but just not displaying.
It will have gone beyond it usefull and certified lifespan.

The supplier will estimate usage up to when the new / replacement meter is fitted.

Must be a spate of broken Ampy meters in the London area…
