Just a quick post after reading about the super rods.

As electricians we are genrally well paid .

But i read a lot of posts about how you can make an r2 trail lead from singles and save £40 . how we can get cheaper rods at screwfix, cheap programmes for printing electrical certs.
Cheap business cards from vista print

Etc Etc

Surely if you turn up to quote for contracts in battered up estates/vans with makeshift tools and issue poor looking certs . Then surely you send out an image that you dont care and have little pride.

You may be the best electrician around, but image is the 1st impression.

Ok if you are recomended then they will accept you reguardless.

And i know it is a recession so money is tight but sometimes cutting costs if false economy:cool:

With regard to vans / vehicles there are people who get the wrong impression from new or expensive vehicles

You charge too much!!

Had that one many times

Yes ive had that one too but normally from customers who want to screw you down on price.

The problem is at the moment work is short and people are under pricing to survive which means they cant earn enough and then have to take short cuts on tools.

MAD MAD CIRCLE.

The good paying clients require an image, clean efficient , sheets down etc

sorry for been the new starter around here, been going since 1st january and its been a steep learning curve as unfortunately i never had the luck of pricing jobs in the Navy as budget was not a problem..!

so what your basically saying is because my price are cheap i must be doing a shoddy job!!

sorry we not all singing and dancing electrical company like your self that has never under quoted and would never dream of setting foot in a house were you would get less than £30 an hour !!! By the way your attitude to all things other than your self is quite frankly shocking!

"Msg to Mods" please don't edit my reply i would like to burst EDDIE'S ego Bubble even if it means i get BANNED for life / duration"

me calm down!! i think u really need to have alittle chat with yourself on what constitutes banter and know were the line is drawn as you drove straight through the fence with your snide remark..! what you insinuated from YOUR post is that if you get what you pay for then made a direct quote to my charging scheme..! from the outside in that reads STEVE is A LEGITIMATE COWBOY!! so if i was to hike my prices by 300% over night i would become the best quality electrical firm in the area..! that's what your getting at!

i got banned from the other forum as i was employed in Military Trade and i was correcting long serving civilian/domestic sparks on the regs and they did not like it and launched a triad of abuse and comments at me to which i replied honestly to them...!! unfortunately a few home truths upset them and there tight nit community and my account was terminated..!

if i wanted to get such abuse like you sent i would go to screw fix and ply my trade there..!

if i get banned from this forum then i get banned but im not retracting comments or apologising, i will let the mods decide my fate, but as for helping people i will continue to do that until the above is decided..!

The post was set up to make a point that maybe if we aimed higher we would get better clients with money.
I have just learned from experience that the bigger companies that i do work for like a better image for their clients,

This maybe wrong and it shouldnt matter what you look like if u do a good job.

But unfortuneatly the richer clients are willing to pay extra for better materials, and insist on MK etc.

where as you install cheaper boards (as stated by you the other day).

It does not mean that your board is any worse , but you went for it to save the customer money.

I too try and save all my clients money , but there are people out there that wont squabble on price because they know they will get the best,;)

i install equipment constructed and tested to BS/IEC standards..!!

and as quoted other day i always give a product 1 chance to satisfy my criteria if i was to use it again!

and if you also read into my post i have used Hager and MK as well....

unfortunately most of my customers have not been rich and to get the job YES i may use a cheaper alternatives and im happy doing that as i can maintain a margain that i require to keep business paying the bills andi also can sleep knowing that MRS Jones from no.23 will still be alive tomorrow as she never got the Horse riding, caravan pulling folk to do same job for cheaper..!

and asfor what you look like, no it should not matter.

i turn up on time, im clean shaven, clothes are clean and pressed, my car is washed and clean, my tools are organised and i wear over shoe covers..!!! first impressions count. techincal ability just reinforces the first!

im not in a position to take on large contracts and / or work for large companies. biggest i have dealings with is local housing association who have entrusted my services a few times. the rest have been small scale domestic and medium sized comercial PAT testing in large office blocks..

I agree,,,, i didnt say that u didnt use Mk i just said that you may have customers that want the cheapest option and that you help them out by providing cheaper boards.

I do jobs for as little as £25.00 because mrs jones cant afford more.

what i was saying is that we all should aim for bigger fish.

That may take time. but its where i want to go

I normally find it's the richer clients that are the penny pinchers they want Rolls Royce kit at Trabant prices

Solicitors are the worst in my experience was ripped off a few times because they know you won't take them to court when they make a payment far less than invoice value in full and final settlement, having been told how to deal with them by a retired court official I don't have any problems working for them now

You will only ever rip a client off once if you want the repeat business you have to do a good job for a fair price

Well what a load of rubbish by the OP. What exactly is wrong with making up a long lead? It is a tool. It needs to be a) long and b) continuous. Those are the only two qualities it requires. Who cares what it looks like? We can all buy lovely shiny things but they will all have an inch thick coating of plaster in a week, so whats the point? I don't know anybody who bought a long lead from a shop, and to be honest if anyone I worked with turned up with one, they would have 'mug' stamped on their head for the rest of the week.

What exactly is wrong with cheaper rods for light, domestic use? Super rods are wildly expensive for what is effectively a few glorified tent poles. I will probably get a few sets when I'm at the top of my game, but people like me, durham and many others on this forum are just starting up, and considering we are just house bashing for the time being, the cheap set will do just fine.

I print my certificates straight from the PDFs on the ELECSA website. They are black and white. I staple them together and use carbon paper. Crucially, they have spaces for me to record relevant information. I have never had a customer say 'hmm, these certificates are a bit bland looking. I was going to mount this above the fireplace, but now I wouldn't even frame it in the bog.' Who cares?

I print my own cards directly. I also do all my own adverts. Mind you, I did work as a graphic designer for a bit. My cards are every bit as good as one from a printer, but cost me next to nothing to produce. My adverts are infinitely better than anything any company round here could offer me, and cost me precisely sod all. I also did my own vehicle decals which, while the back window one is top, the side decals aren't that great. That said, they are certainly better than nothing.

On the subject of vehicles, I use a 94 clio for work. It is clean and tidy, I have ground out the rust and resprayed where I ground, and now it is very shiny. The car cost £180, the primer cost a quid, the paint cost three quid, and putting it all together cost me a lazy afternoon. I also got some roofbars for free off freecycle. It is more than I need right now, and suits me down to the ground. We would all love to go and buy brand new transits before even registering with a scheme, but we are not all that well off, mad or both.

As durham said - I turn up on time, with bright eyes and clean hair. I am polite to the customers, and build a little relationship with them. I also give reasonable quotes. This blows them away to start with, because they were expecting an arrogant know-it-all who would charge the earth to move a lightswitch. I do a good job, am neat and tidy, and am friendly and personable with the customers. This gets me repeat work. If I have the opportunity to use cheaper goods that are of decent quality, I will do. I have used Wylex, Crabtree (exactly the same by the way) squareD and MK boards, as well as Newlec, Castlec and several other low-priced boards. The only one I have had a problem with was newlec, but to be honest I found the cheaper boards on the whole easier to work with that Wylex/Crabtree, and I find MK sentry to be exceedingly annoying. Using cheaper stuff benefits me and the customer, as they get a little off, and I make a little more. I also get non-17th boards cheaply from the markets and convert them. Again saving money.

I don't want to offend you but I have always been under the impression that people who just throw money at things and rely on big brand names, instead of using a little ingenuity and shopping around for something that suits them are dull, unimaginative, pig headed and a bit naive.

If you don't want to offend why make the comment you have

I think you need to change your impression.

I've been in this game long enough to know when to throw money at things and when not to
Yes I DO use Super Rods as currently it has worked out cheaper than buying 2-3 cheap sets every year
I use Waku step ladders one of my current set are 25 years old and cost £580 back then, it works out alot cheaper than £100 a year I was paying for cheap throw away ladders before I got them

Yes I also have alot of cheap tools both bought and made by myself that work and have served me well for years

If I can repair customers equipment cheaply and it's a viable repair I will rather than replace it

So I don't agree with your comment

Eddie, I ain't trying to provoke a reaction, mate, that ain't the way I roll. It is my opinion though and I think I'm entitled to it. You are of course entitled to your opinion, but you seem to be under the impression that it ends there, and that because you are enitled to it, then it must be the be-all and end-all. And please don't be under the impression that Durham was barred for arguing with you - he was barred for swearing and that bar has been lifted as it was obvious he was provoked. Until you are a moderator please do not threaten me with banning.

I don't particularly want to have a barney with anyone, but I do think that all this 'oh it's my opinion' stuff doesnt apply to personally insulting people and calling them a cowboy. Anyone who did not see the original deleted post can't really comment but it is certainly MY opinion that it was bear-baiting and designed to provoke a reaction. I'm sorry if this is not the case but that is certainly what it looked like to me. That said, if any mods do think that I am trying to pick a fight, I will be more than happy to take down these posts.
