big tony

hi Guys, i'am looking for a bit of help and advice, from the group if I may?
i'am privileged to have some great friends all of who have successful businesses, and I’m thinking of starting my own referral type business, with consent of my friends of course. the idea is for me to set myself up with a phone number, website, & post flyers etc... advertising my friends business and for every successful job they complete by a direct referral from myself I will receive 10% Payment. And ofcourse I want to do things properly

Question is

1. Can I use the Gas safe & NICEIC Logos on my website & Flyers without fear of prosecution. as the company I’m dealing with are legitimate and are fully accredited and are Gassafe & NICEIC approved. ( I do make it perfectly clear that its my contractors that are fully approved & insured )

2. do I have to give a receipt to the customer who gets a job done, as I only made the referral to someone else. is it ok for the contractor to give the receipt then give me my 10 %

3. who is ultimately responsible for job customers Satisfaction or if something does go wrong with the job or the customer is not happy with it... is it me or the company I refereed the job to .

4.
Do I need any type of insurance (personal or liability etc.)

5. I also work full time 6-2, my wife is happy to take calls untill i finish work, how would i work round the tax situation because im paye in my full time job.

Any info would be most welcome, or any web links would be great

Yours Tony White.

Before the internet and mobile phones its a good idea but you are trying to do a Rated People or a Service Magic and thats not good as these two business model is to grab the top spot on Google by paying for it then passing on the job for a fee to allow the tradesman to quote for the job only problem is 5 pay to put a quote in only one gets the job so 4 guys out of pocket and in my view a race to the bottom.

I have had countless offers like this and turned down every one of them because my business model does cannot afford it why ? In this current economical climate its all about keeping costs down. I have even lost work from a letting agent who wanted a "fee" off me so that I can do jobs for them it worked out that if I did I would be working for £7 an hour.

So you want to advertise your friends businesses and get a cut of their turnover? Have you asked your mates how they feel about that? I'm lucky enough to have some very close friends but if one of them wanted 10 % of my turnover for doing not a great deal I'd be having a think about the friendship.
What can you do for them for 10% that they couldn't do for themselves, probably for less?

You are only opening a business which already exist by several other companies, so you need to ask yourself, do you have the funding to compete with these multi million pound companies. And as explained already, the idea is ok for the customer, but very profitable for the trader. Before you loose alot of your hard earned cash....I would consider a career move.

Thing is I call this middle man practice and years ago it worked but as I said in the current climate its a big boys game ie type in the search box electrician Glasgow and you get hit with Rated People,Service Magic,Yell,My builder etc.

Don't get me wrong not slagging it off as you are thinking of running it part time fine but don't give up your day job

Right , what im saying is i want to offer a all round service were i get the work in and sub contracted it out, i will be the one head hunting the work and geting it and my freinds are made up im passing them work , (so how am i hardly doing anythink when it will be me geting the work),

I dont see i will be doing anythink wrong

Thankyou

This occurs a lot on this forum where people post an idea looking for feedback but does not really want it or only wants the answers that reassures them that they are on the right track.

I have to declare I am neither up or down about but have given my tuppance worth without malice as I don't get off in having a pop at anyone and I get disappointed when the OP spits the dummy out as they perceive they are being ridiculed but instead they should take all comments on board good or bad and see it as a test run for their idea

Tony, the market for what you're proposing is saturated with big hitters with big budgets. Your mates are probably getting work off their own backs. I cannot see for the life of me what this proposal would do that would be different from what is going on now.

If a mate of mine wanted to do this and I had regular work from other sources, then I would merely price jobs higher so my profit margins were not hit too much. Then if I didnt get the work it wouldn't be too much of problem due to other commitments.

Why not ask Gas Safe and NICEIC ??

Watchdog and Rouge Traders are full of people with the same ideas as this, they all seem to pass the buck when it comes to guarantees and after sales services they just want to hide behind a website in their back bedroom and take a cut from everyone else's hard graft lol

Aye ... a mention on Watchdog and / or Rogue traders does tend to make them blush. ;)
