Hi everyone, I have just had installed an ideal logic 24 heat only system, the installer although gas safe was not able to complete the wiring, currently there is an old dan foss flick switch timer which does not seem to be compatible with the new boiler. I have purchased a new drayton timer, but need a competent experienced sparky to wire it in. Is there anyone available lto do this job or offer advice on where to look. Your help will be much appreciated. I am in the west midlands in the Walsall area. Cheers

Have to say I agree I do work for 8 different plumbers (whatever they call themselves) and I am told when they are doing it a week in advance as they know I will be needed

It seems to be a problem this. My Dad is 'Gas Safe' but I dont think he could wire a plug. He was taught how to wire up a boiler with mid position valves but he doesn't really understand any of it. He did go out and do this once by strictly following the wiring diagram colours.

They probably shouldn't teach them anything on these courses

They should teach them that:

1) Electricians have higher status than plumbers on building sites
2) Don't leave pipes, especially hot water pipes, resting on our nice mains cables; or at least let us know before 2nd fix if we need to move any cables away from your pipes.
3) You don't know the wiring regs, we do. So please, don't tell me you can't put 230v kit in bathrooms and boilers have to be 'cross-bonded'

Just venting my spleen

"Hello hillbillie",

You obviously have NOT dealt with or come into contact with any Professional `Plumbers` / Heating Engineers / Gas Engineers.

I have never seen the `Electricians have higher status than plumbers on building sites` scenario in the last 30 Plus Years.

When a Plumber was ONLY carrying out Plumbing and very basic Gas Installations during the 1950`s 1960`s and early 1970`s - NOT Heating Installation and All Domestic Gas work [for those that have passed the necessary Gas ACS Assessment and Registration] what You stated might have been the case - but in my experience NOT now.

I have ALWAYS seen Professional Electricians as the excellent Tradesmen [and Women] that they are - I have a high regard to your Profession / Trade BUT I am disappointed to read that You still have this `Bash the Plumbers` attitude.

In the past I have worked on some very large projects and on one Contract I was the Site Manager for the Plumbers - Heating Installers and Gas Fitters in conjunction with a Site Manager for the Electricians - We were both working for the same very large M & E Contractor.

While working on that project I had direct liaison with the Electrical Site Manager about our associated Works so I was constantly looking at the Heating - Plumbing - Gas and Electrical Works and Workmanship etc.

I / We did not experience any conflict / animosity between the Electricians and the other Trades.

When there are Professional Tradesmen on a Contract there should be respect for each others Work / Workmanship and there should be no conflict between the Trades IF the Supervision / Site Management is also `Professional`.

Of course I know that this will be scoffed at - and I am sure that a lot of You WILL have come across `Plumbers` who are FAR from Professional - and Contracts where there has been problems between the Trades.

Apart from those very large Contracts which were some Years ago I have been involved in loads of Refurbishments / Conversions / New Builds etc. - obviously I have worked on these with Electricians - I have NEVER had a Conflict with the Electrician on any Job that I have ever worked on.

If possible I would always ensure that I liaised with the Electrician about our `Routes` for Pipes / Cables etc. - to prevent any possibility of interfering with each others work / materials.

When working for most Builders their Electrician would obviously be carrying out ALL of the Electrical Works - including my Heating Controls wiring - so I would be liaising with them for this and while We were speaking I would let them know about my Pipe Routes and ask about ensuring that I did not take any route that was `crucial` to them - or put pipework across any area where they needed to drill holes etc.

BUT - This is because I AM a Professional.

I have seen a LOT of Plumbers / Heating Engineers / Gas Engineers Work - I have been on Sites where I was Supervising up to 60 Tradesmen - looking at their Workmanship on a very regular basis - Poor Workmanship or a Bad Attitude to other Trades would NOT have been allowed by Me.

Just `venting MY spleen` in response to your comments.

Regards,

Chris
