if someone could clear this up for me and finally give me a straightforward answer i would be very gratefull.
when installing new meter tails that are not in a safe zone, ie 150mm from ceiling/angled walls etc and not going directly to an accessory, if they are buried in a wall and protected by a fabricated steel plate that will be screwed to the wall, will this be within the regs ?
i'm saying yes, but the direct to an accessory is the grey area

As long as the steel plate offers protection against nails and screws then yes.

mechanical protection is widely accepted to be a minimum of 3mm thick if memory serves. I've always been worried about mild steel rusting and staining the plaster and paint with time.

earthed galvanized capping would be acceptable. but probably not as good as a bonded 3mm plate, belt and braces n all that.
