Discuss OLD SWA Cabling and earth sizes in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi,
Is any body aware when LSOH SWA cable to BS6724 first introduced to the UK? Also, is anybody aware of the copper sizes that were available for the bare copper conductors used to bond installations in the circa 1960's? I am coding a PIR report and for my own knowledge I would like to know what size copper was typically used back then.

Thanks

Paul

BS6724 is listed as1997 updated 2007.
bare earth wire for bonding in 1960's was usually 7/.029 = 2.5mm2. main earth often 7/.044 = 4mm2. if memory serves.

There was no bonding in the 60`s but as I started my apprenticeship in 62 I can remember most of the sizes,
3/029 = 1.0mm used for earthing counduits especially tin whistle
3/036 = 1.5mm sometimes used for obtaining an earth from the water main, yes it was allowed then!
7/029 = 2.5mm bare earth wire run with twin 7/029 cables on power circuits and commonly used for running to an earth electrode from an ELCB (voltage frame connection)
7/036 in between 2.5 and 4.00mm
7/044 = 4.0mm
7/052 = 4.0mm
7/064 = 6.00

hope this helps
