hi everyone
i was asked to have a look at a oven for a mate of my brothers he said it was making a fizzing noise which i replied not good and whats making the noise oven or socket so i went today to have a look to my amazement when i took the 45a dp cooker sw that he said was controlling it i found instead of 6mm there was 2.5mm and it looks like they have just taken a double socket off and replaced it with a 45a dp with socket outlet going down to a spur double socket with oven and ignition plug for gas hob i tried to look at info plate for wattage and ampere rating but was unable to tell but the cooker is fan assisted and the flex looks like 2.5mm or 4mm not sure with a 13a plug stuffed on it flex to big to fit through gripper and the conductors was stripped roughly as well bare conductors nearly touching can anyone tell me the best way to sort it as i will probably be asked to do it there is no cooker circuit ccu is 12 way 100a split load 6 protected 6 not there is up and downstairs lights on unprotected side and on rcd protected side is1 socket ring for whole house including the oven ive mentioned the oven is knackered only thing looks like is working is the clock so they will be getting a knew one can anyone tell me the correct size of cable is it 2.5 from 16 breaker at ccu to a 20a dp sw then down to a flexible outlet am i correct in saying it should be on its own circuit as its a lot of load of 1 ring circuit it must have been done in last 5 or 6 yrs as its got the new colours there is no cooker radial the kitchen is also tiled if its over 2.3 kw should it have its own circuit anybody got any ideas of whats needed to sort it any help would be useful cheers

Thats gotta be the longest sentence in history mate:p......sounds like a new radial will be required...a 20a in 2.5 mm would be fine for a 2.3kw oven assuming the legnth of run is not excessive. Remember any new circuit or work in a kitchen comes under part P.Alternatively suggest a gas oven..

when you say 20a do you mean the breaker.what method of terminating the flex as to me it looks way to big for a 13a plug can you get a flex outlet for this.sorry dont bother usually with full stops........on internet. so do i fit a new breaker 20a or 16a and then 2.5mm to a 20a dp sw then to a flex outlet as a socket is only 13a outlet, sorry for my lack of knowledge when i used to do new build we just fit a 32a circuit for a hob and a low level socket for the oven as they had smaller rating then it could be bigger than 2.3kw couldnt tell of info plate.

hi sparkswillfly
do you mean intall a 32a breaker with 6mm t&e to 45a dp sw with socket outlet with a cooker outlet plate .is this ok with a flex probably less than 13a not sure of wattage whoever did it stuffed a very large flex in a 13a plug or do you mean fit a 16a or 20a breaker to cooker sw then to outlet, as i said they have just removed a double socket fitted a cooker sw with socket and a double socket spurred under work top of that with oven plugged in and instead of the cables to each socket arriving vertically looks like they are arriving horizontally from behind tiles across length of worktop so to run a cable down chased in will cross over the socket ring or other option of trunking will look rough over tilesand will have to fit a surface box whoever did it should be hung by their b??????s we was always taught to run vertically except on the low level sockets but new regs say you can run vertically which i think is rough

if i run a new cable for the new oven and its 3kw 13.05A rounded up so as to provide its own dedicated circuit, should i fit new mcb 16a, 2.5mmt&e,to 20A d.p. swirch to a double socket for oven and ignition for gas hob is this ok or to future proof should i fit a 32a mcb,6.0mm t&e to 45a d.p. with socket outlet down to a cooker outlet plate is it ok to wire flex to that or should i fit double socket which is the best way and size of cable as i said in first post they have just remove a double socket fitted 45a dp down to double socket any ideas chaps on best method and size of cable cheers
