Hello,

My workshop pillar drill is currently controlled at the mains socket so not ideal. I have come across the attached start stop box but unfortunately no wiring diagram. Having looked online the only advice I can find is that the live feed should go through the E stop button. I have had a go at this plus wiring the start stop buttons in series figuring that as the start is NO it will latch on when pressed and the stop button will cut the feed to this when pressed. This doesn't work, the motor runs when the start is pressed but it won't latch on so the button needs to be held all the time.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Matt

Is the drill single or 3-phase? Which of the buttons are latching on that assembly you've shown? What other controls are on the drill, is there a speed controller, reversing switch, is there a contactor?

So the motor is single phase 240V. At the moment it has just a 3 pin plug which works fine but us not ideal. The only switch that mechanically latches is the emergency stop. The start button which is NO has no mechanical latch so must (?) magnetically latch when connected correctly I assume.

Thanks again,

Those are only the control buttons, they do not switch the motor power directly. You need a contactor to do the actual work of making and breaking the motor circuit. The contactor provides the latching function.

Ah! That is really useful thank you. I didn't think the switch had enough room for a coil etc. is the contractor a stand alone component I can buy and safely add to the circuit?

Thanks again

Is this a hobby type drill or is it a decent commercial type? Who is going to be using this drill? There's statutory standards and codes that dictate how machine safety systems should be configured and installed. What controls did the drill originally have? Maybe you can attach a photo of the drll and where the controls should go.
