if I open the Smiley drop box from the options, it's blank, not a smiley in sight. any suggestions???

If you are using windows then while the curser is in the chat section, just right click the mouse and then pick Emoji.

I've noticed that too.
All I can do is :)-and  .
So all I can be is cool or happy or both.
:-(

I've discovered a way to do it!

The smileys don't work on this site, so you can't just click on the smiley icon above where you are typing (although you used to be able to a short while ago) You can use your own emojis though. I'm using a laptop. Right click and select emoji! 😊😉👍👌
They dont look as good as the site ones though 😞
Site emoji = :)
laptop emoji = 🙂
This is getting very technical.

Oddly, my big fat PC works fine but my laptop doesn't find the smileys...
Mind you, I'm currently in Spain working through a VPN, so that might be the problem?
Anyway, it's sunny and 30 degrees, so I'm off to get another cold beer from the fridge!

I don't get that option when right clicking, but the windows button and full stop brings up a big box.

Generally too much of a faff though 😐and they're very plain, as you point out.
