Discuss SWA for outside lighting in the Australia area at ElectriciansForums.net

Sorry for the dumb question but I have no regs at home and am having a blank.

A friend has asked for me to run a cable to an outside shed for lighting and en-route go through a couple of adaptable boxed with flex outlets to run a couple of floodlights on the side of his house. The SWA will be clipped directly to the outside of his house and then along a wall to the shed. He hasn't chose any outside lights yet but I am going to allow for 1kW to be safe although I am trying to recommend energy efficient ones. In the shed will be 3 x 70w strip lights so I have a total load of around 1.2kW

From looking at some old notes I had worked out volt drop on 230v over 50m to be around 2.5% on a 1.5mm2 SWA. Is this correct and if so am I correct in thinking a circuit with lighting needs to be under 3%????

Sorry guys

I always think back the brother in law, the DIY maniac. I acquired some 6mm SWA for him to supply his shed. I’d not seen the shed but just told him I’d connect it up to the CU when he was ready. SHED? It was like a bloody bungalow! He wasn’t happy when I told him to start digging again and I’ll get some different cable for you. This time I acquired 16mm!

Got to admit though for a shed it was great, stone built, double glazed, a couple of armchairs, sound system, fridge, barbeque. Who needs a house?
