Why waste money of bootlace crimps when you can do this

You do realise the hammering flat bit was speeded up?

Best “hack” I’ve seen was to put the bootlace crimps on backwards, and cutting off the coloured part.

Easier to put them on the right way, crimp, and give the plastic a light squeeze with pliers. It then just slips over the ferrule.

If you want ferrules without the plastic boot why not just buy them without it?

Also you can get chock blocks with cable protection spring things:
