Does anyone have any idea how much I should be offering a first year apprentice,

He has given me a hand in the past and is a very hard worker so feel the NMW for apprentices is a little to low for him.

Also is there funding avalible etc?

Cheers

There is grants available for taking on an apprentice, around £1000 IIRC. If you think he is worth more than the NMW then pay him what you think he's worth. 1st year average is around £110 a week. Some training providors may tell you £90 a week!!.

Your decision at the end of the day.

I think a first year apprentice should be paid around about his personal tax allowance limit / start of stamp contributions.

Then you pay him (say) £100 and he goes home with 99.99% of it. No good breaking his heart by making him realise he doesn't work for himself but to keep the government.

Not just yet anyway.

Save that for next year!!

would say £6.95 an hour then a bonus.....

the way it worked in one place I was working at years ago was, they paid the lad a basic rate (like the one I mentioned, say £6.95 an hour) then they paid him £50 (will say "performance bonus" on his wage slip)extra once every 4 weeks to help him with tool buying (as well as supplying some for him) and when they got him doing PAT testing, they put a little bit onto the rate, something like £7.30 an hour when PAT testing or stripping out for a refurbishment job to make them feel appreciated and they set aside a small amount each week into a pot, after about 18 months of good work from him, they bought him his first cheap car at the Auctions which set him up and he was well chuffed....

you are allowed to buy something worth £50.00 (last time I checked) for each employee for Christmas every year as well for a company Christmas present and this can be written off against the tax bill, in addition to any private gifts you might decide to give if the workers are good for your company/business...

£90 a week was £90 too much for the apprentice i took on, but start with what the minimum is, just as a base, that way you can give him extra for good work, a reward if you like. if he is sh*t you dont give him extra and he doesnt get an easy ride.

my apprentice joined me after 3 months at college, i said to him, " you know how to strip cables dont you
"yeah"
"ok, strip those 3 at that light"
when i came back they were stripped, but he had cut blue and brown off leaving just the cpc, was a sign of things to come really

Sound like apprentices where spoilt at that company!...

Would love to have done my apprenticeship there, sounds like they looked after them very well...

Cheers guys thank you for your input, I think I will go around the £120 mark then scale it up each year plus pay rises for 17th, new 2391, etc.

Thanks again
