Hi,

I re-wired my house in Oct 2014 and installed a Hager plastic split, dual RCD, 16 way consumer unit. I now want to convert the garage and planned on running a 6mm from a spare 40A MCB in the consumer unit to a metal clad 4 way consumer unit in the garage.

My questions are, will I then need to swap the 16 way split unit for a metal unit or will the 17th Edition Insulated board be OK to leave in? Also do I HAVE to mount the new metal 4 way board at around 1.35m in the converted garage or is this only a recommendation?

If I have to swap to consumer unit I may consider just extending the circuit that feeds the garage.

Thanks

no, you don't need to change the existing CU. and you can mount the garage CU at any height you think . it's just the new work that has to comply with current regs.
