evening y'all

just looking for some basic advised for a numpty!

never really installed/ used cat5/coaxial cable before!

Got a extension jobby coming up after xmas :santa_cheesy: ......'a cat5 point' and 'a tv point' is wanted along with sockets and lights etc

guessing for the cat5 point- just run a cat5 (or cat6) cable to the new cat5/6 socket- from existing extension or master point? -is cat5 points just same as 'bt' points??

also for the new tv point-

if its sky they are after- just run a shotgun cable to a new satellite wall socket- from where the sky dish is located- and get the customer to get sky out to connect

and if its not sky- just a normal tv aerial- just run a single coaxial cable from the new aerial wall socket to the aerial on the roof? but then how will this connect into the aerial? will there be a box/junction to plug into etc??

like I say- never done this stuff before- so nothing to compare it too!

look forward to your replies :73:

Cat 5/6 needs to be run back to the router or switch, the are not wired like bt in a radial.
coax to to sat, may need a least 2 for sky plus.
coax to aerial ....well its get on roof time as termination box is on the mast itself.

And if it's sky or virgin check what their requirements as virgin apparently refused to connect up the RG6 I chased into tv but the hdmi was satisfactory

Questions for client:

1. Where is the hub/router?

2. Where is the TV aerial?

3. Doe the TV aerial have a splitter now? and if so are there any spare "ways"

4. If the answer to 3 is no, then you need to determine where the splitter amp needs to go AND make provision for a socket or 2 near it.

5. If its Sky then best get pally with a local TV/Sky independent specialist and get them in for a look/advice.

2 WAY F-TYPE TV FREEVIEW VIRGIN CABLE SKY SATELLITE SPLITTER + 3 CONNECTORS | eBay

can't use one of these? doesn't look like it needs mains supply to it?

and does the splitter have to be sited near the actually aerial/ in the loft

or can i stick it behind the original tv (so will be near a socket) take the coaxial cable out the tv- and stick into the new splitter and then from the splitter back into the original tv and run my new coaxial cable to the new point- job done?

There are different splitters but I would venture to suggest that the best ones are near the aerial. Put it this way, if the splitter is in the loft and it' has spare outputs then extra cables can be added!

Some splitters can be mounted in the loft then be powered via a psu which sends DC to it via the coax from one of the aerial points.
Others need a socket next to them, and others are unpowered.
If you have a good clean signal then a passive split will likely be fine.
If you take a poor signal with interference then amplifying it will increase the interference by the same ratio as the signal is increased.
