DIY or Homeowner (Perhaps seeking pro advice, or an electrician)
Hi all -

I keep seeing various adverts to "train to be an electrician" in 4 days, 8 days, 12 days etc.

Are any of them worthwhile? (If allowed, please share any unbiased opinions of specific courses)

OR

Is the only real way to become an electrician by doing an apprenticeship?

In a realistic world, if I were to retrain, it would be domestic jobs I'd do. I've read various conflicting posts, e.g. you need to be Part P qualified, but Part P is no good without a full qualification to sign it off, etc.

Please be honest in your replies, and thank you in advance!

We have loads of threads on various courses.

There are genuine short courses that have training centres and do correctly work with you to gain a certain qualification or two. And then you tend to find thats when you start actually learning on the job so really need to be with an existing company or find a local spark to help you.

These are good for top up courses and online things too.

But then there are a lot of companies who advertise as training providers. Dont have training centres. Use old car sales tactics to pressure sales. And often have sold the wrong training compared to what is required for a certain type of spark.

Its a symptom of proper local collegs not being competitive or realistic with timings. And underinvestment in vocational training.

If you find specific companies you want to ask about search for the name on the forum and reply to an existing thread. Or if there isn't one, make one and use their name as the thread title.

Across our little network of forums we have helped many save thousands. But we hear about many more usually who found the thread AFTER already signing silly contracts or being ripped off even.

Some are scams.

Try not to use that word in a thread with a company name in it. We get lots of legal letters already.

Thank you.
I once, over 20 years ago, signed up to complete a computer engineer course (or something similar). Luckily, I got out, got a refund, and helped others.

I’m hoping I won’t fall for the same trick again.

It is looking like adult life (having to work) is preventing me from retraining in a trade, particularly electrics, though.

I shall not give up hope, though!
