I have a wet/dry vac that has a power tool autostart outlet in it which means I can plug my power tool into the vacuum and when I start the power tool the vacuum starts and when I stop the power tool the vacuum stops. I am building a power tool work table with a table saw, router and jigsaw and am using the vacuum as a dust collector. I will plug in an extension cord into the vacuum power tool outlet and then the tools into the extension cord so that when I turn anyone of them on, the vacuum starts up. I also what to be able to simply start up the vacuum on its own without turning on a tool, and as the vacuum will be inside the work table and difficult to reach, I would like to make a switch that plugs into the extension cord and triggers the vacuum as if it were a power tool. (Please see the diagram). How can I do this? Thank you for your help.

The easiest way would be to plug in another appliance with a load great enough to activate the vacuum cleaners detection circuit. I'd try a lamp with a filament bulb first, perhaps 100W. I cant find a specifcation for minimum starting load.

Yes you can plug an extension lead in and connect multiple power tools.

The switch plugged into the extension lead is a very bad idea, as it will create a dead short between the live and neutral resulting in a bang flash.

As Freddo suggests, you need to find a suitable load dedicated to just activating the vacuum.

Thanks Freddo, I've done that but I was wondering if there was a way to do it without using a light or fan. (BTW an 11W light bulb will trigger the power with a slight delay)

I understand that I just used the picture for demonstration purposes
