Domestic rewire advice??

Hi fellow sparks. Just started a rewire at mo 3 bed house. Not my usual business tbh. Far and few. Just after any advice into people's routines and methods for efficiency. I'm sure the lads that do this day in day out know some tricks of the trade!! I can't see the light at the end if the tunnel and it's only day 1!!!!

a few ways to do it.

1. power down the lot, rip out, rewire on a 1st fix -2nd fix basis. fit a double socket on a RCD +MCB board to give power for tools. lights etc.

2. rewire each circuit/floor at a time.

3. get someone else to do it.

I always do lighting first round always seem better with the lights on. Are you doing it alone?

-Cooker
-Rings
-Heating
-D/S Lights
- Up Lights

Day 3- Second fix Sl*t
Second fix everything at once, and leave face plates un-screwed for testing.

Day 4- Test and Commission

This is a brief outline on how i would carry out an empty rewire, Ive never done a lived in rewire and wouldn't for that matter. If its a new build same outline without second fix and testing, two days for a standard 4 bed on my tod.

You can do it while young, then aches and pains and general knackeredness come along but you can offset the slower pace with experience. I can 2nd fix a double socket in 4 minutes if pushed.

Yeah and Rough Na thats what an apprenticeship in house bashing gets you, sadly my boss was on price so i was his donkey, fast donkey= good donkey. I must say now i am on day rate and calling my own shots i tend to have a more relaxed pace. You old boys or should i say 'seasoned" boys would wipe the floor with me, when it comes to containment.

Excellent advice Lee, I still see people nailing boards down, just silly. I was glad of screwed boards when a customers cat went missing one day.

I like a rewire but only if there is no one living there, it has no carpets or furtniture, it doesn't have tounge and groove flooring and the whole gaff is getting replastered

Picturing that has me laughing but I've been there too, half an hour of moving cr@p before you can get to do anything, and that's in every room.

Last rewire I done the landlord hadn't got rid of all the furniture like he was supposed to and the carpets were being replaced.......left the apprentice to break the furniture up and lob it out the window on to the front garden then Stanley the carpets up which also got lobbed out the window whilst I went down the cafe with the other sparks

mice packing their stuff. now that what I call a rewire .

I take it all these day 1 day 2 etc are in an empty house, wouldn't be able to do that in an occupied dwelling

Yes pete. Properties empty. I just questioned my self and time scale as you hear of these sparks rewiring occupied houses in a couple of days. It's just me and a young lad. Literally his first month at electrical work.

Cannot think of anything worse,than an occupied ,full rewire...need full unhindered access,or nowt.

Did a job years back,at a retired judges property,where he and his wife,sat at the kitchen table all day in their bath robes,reading dozens of newspapers,whilst 12 cats marched about,putting their feet in and out of every cup,bowl and pan.

Never got offered a brew-thank the lord...and he paid me with a money-order,which i had to ring me dad,to find out what it was.

There was no repeat.

Surely if you have no experience , then you could not meet a competent value required , i would guess you would fail regs however long it took you and it could well be dangerous result. Is it worth that when you could get it done for around 4k-4.5k with certification , if its still worth the bash take out quality life and building insurance

Well best place might be a college course , get some basics behind you , by not even being at a competent level you are going against all guidance and hs at work regs , how would you get anyone to sign it off to local authority .

There was no sarcasm in my post just truth , maybe you should have worded your original post better , no mention of you being in the trade , in fact you say no your normal business , and then asked for advice , maybe if you had made any experience you had more apparent people would not think , hey up its the bread maker going to rewire his house , having said that i do nearly only Domestic electrical work , over 40 years Domestic , last week i got asked to put in 4 3 phase sockets , i still knew what to do , regs etc, so i stand by why if your in the trade you need to ask , as it just gets done when it gets done , especially as empty , no sarcasm was meant just honesty as i read it , and if you read original post from out of the box maybe you will see looking in its now not how the situation looks.

I was looking for advice on in a large dwelling and an erratic tripping mcb , asking other sparks who may have had the problem to give advice to avoid full breakdown to test circuits , to identify likelihoods , and i did resolve it , i thought that was what the forum was for , i appreciate this guy was looking for advice but never gave indication he was a spark , hence advice would be different to a baker , so your point is worthless as i see it
