Hello,

I've been reading only on here on and off for a couple of years and thought I'd finally get around to a post!!

I'm an Elecsa member now for a couple of years and built things up slowly but came across a strange one today that I've not come across before.

I fitted a new CU and the gas meter was fine before hand, dead tests all came back ok, but when I powered back up the gas meter dials were spinning at a rate of knots! Turning off the boiler stopped it but why would this only become an issue after changing the board? If there was a fault on the boiler it should show up before also surely?

There's other works going on there but no gas leak or the likes either apparent and you'd know if you were getting through that much gas.

It appears to be a faulty meter but just wondered if anyone had come across it before.

thanks

Added a couple of sockets so had a bit of floor up but not today, nothing near enough to the CU that could've been damaged.
You will be surprised where old gas pipes run. How old is the property you are working in? I'm sure others will agree, but I've seen gas pipes run diagonally across walls to get from A to B, also around the front of chimney breast.

I'm going down the gas safe route and will recheck round again to see that I'm clear of everything. Thanks for your help all.

I will try not to leave it another few years before my next thread post!

If switching off the boiler stopped the meter dials, then there isn't likely to be a pipework leak.

Did the boiler appear to be working correctly when it was powered up?

Whatever the result, please post up what the cause is in case anyone else ever encounters it. :)

Boiler was working fine, lit up no problem etc. will certainly post the outcome. Thanks

The dials on the gas meter will spin when the boiler is firing, this is the meter doing its job of metering the gas usage.
If you've had the boiler off for a few hours to do the job then it'll likely be getting a demand as soon as you put the power back on so will kick in to life.

I turned it off straight away the first time to check there was no obvious gas leak then left it a bit longer, a few minutes maybe. Should it settle down within a few minutes?

Only when the heating had been satisfied ,this would take a bit of time this weather. Did you try turning the heating off and just turning the hot tap on to see if it stopped spinning when you turned it off?

Also how did you check for gas leaks? I know a couple of ways of doing this. One has fallen out of favour these days as it is considered to be a tad dangerous, and the other should only be carried out by a Gassafe chappy.

i didn't try the del boy checking for petrol option!!

Just checked for the smell of gas too be honest

So the gas meter dials spin when the boiler is on and stop spinning when the boiler is off?

Do the dials on the electric meter spin if you switch a big load on and then stop spinning when you switch it off? I think you'd better check just in case there is electricity leaking all over the floor, it'll stain the carpets something rotten y'know!

Exactly what I was thinking.

Paul, why were you checking gas meter dials pre and post working on the electrical installation?

you can always flog off the solar panels cheap.

Yes, no and the customer has a clever vacuum cleaner to tidy up the mess!

Good answer! You'll get on well here with a sense of humour like that.

A I'm saying really is that it sounds like everything is doing exactly what it should. A modern condensing boiler uses a heck of a lot of has very quickly when it starts up and gets up to its temperature.
There are different sizes of gas meter and also a lot of imperial meters still around. An imperial meter reading in cubic feet will obviously spin faster than one reading in cubic meters!

and if that's not confused you, BG bill you in kilowatt hours.

gas meter is in the same cupboard and noise of dials spinning is very audible, didn't check pre work per se just didn't hear them going beforehand

Most gas meters make a fair amount of noise when a high demand is made like a boiler starting up from cold.
You wouldn't have heard it before hand because there probably wasn't a demand for the boiler. After a few hours of no power the house and the hot water will have cooled down and so there will be a demand for the boiler when power is restored

have a dump on her bedroom shagpile. that'll keep her out your way for a bit.

...I've swopped the gas meter for a bubble trap, off the top of a demi-john,and the electric for a lava-lamp....if they want to check, they can get a court access order with power of arrest...my belt and laces need checking,anyway...:bobby:

I hit a gas pipe years ago. it was like hitting the jackpot! Went straight to the gas meter to switch off. The red indicator pointer was whizzing around like hell. So went to phone box (no mobiles in those days) to report incident to my bosses and what I had done. They said, have I switched the gas off. I said no, I'm just having a smoke whilst waiting.

The meter had returned to a normal speed so to speak so customer was happy.

Had a poo on the shagpile which didn't go down too well though. Cheers for that one telectrix!

cheers all
