Hi,

I'm a new member and new forum sponsor, but I like to start off with a question if I may...

At home I have two smoke alarms that are wired to each other and to the power supply. They have previously worked fine, except for occasionally disagreeing with my wifes cooking, but one day they just suddenly went off for no apparent reason.

And they didn't stop. I tried pressing the reset buttons (difficult to do while at the same time trying to keep your fingers in your ears!) but to no avail.

The only way I could shut them up was to switch them off at the consumer box. If I switch them back on again they go off imediately as before so they are now permanently off.

Any suggestions as to what might cause this? They both have battery compartments, but they've never had batteries in since we moved in (about 4 years).

Cheers.

try replacing the battery's. four years is good battery life. its ok when its just the smokes not agreeing with the wifes cooking and not the stomac the day after. :)

I think what you have is a fire. You should evacuate the area until safe to return ;)

or try disconnecting the interlinking wire between the alarms and see which one still is sounding ( that would be the faulty one)

Can find a make on it, but I think I see the problem now - inside the battery compartment is a very small sticker that says "replace detector by 2005"... :)

Do these need to be replaced by a qualified electrician?

And can anyone suggest an electrician in the Stevenage area?
