Charge what you think is fair...to you too. Don't undersell yourself, your skills, your experience. When that happens, you lose faith in your ability and worth, and that should not happen.

Im' Not a sparks but the company I work for charges £55 A light
Had a guy earlier ask for a quote via email, says he wanted 30 downlights replaced, he didnt give too much info so I emailed him a rough price of £30 to £40 per fixture if its simple like for like replacement with easy cable runs and wiring is upto scratch etc.. but what he meant was it was 30 little fixed lights the sort that you cant replace bulbs in running off a transformer, He has 3 transformers with 10 bulbs off each one, soem of which have failed. He wants several 240v downlights as replacement.
Should heard the shock in his voice when he phoned me back asking if the price really is £900+... Once he explained things a bit better he accepted my quote but if the customer is not specific they cant moan...
On the other hand I had a wealthy young Qatari woman have me fit lights in her walk in wardrobe and ensuite last year, for her money was meaningless, when it come to pay she went off and come back with a pile of crisp new £50's! the contents of her wardrobe are worth more than most peoples houses.. thankfully she had it moved out before hand..

^^ I went to change 10 x MR16 lamps to GU10 LED's just before xmas ......

6 of the MR16's had individual transformers

4 were connected to 2 transformers - but the connections & transformers were screwed to the joists and needed holes cut in the ceiling to access and improve .....

Fortunately my price was an estimate and after I had finished the customer needed to find a plasterer & decorator.

Just had a look at that site. He will have misread it. The job he was probably looking at is titled:

Replace old lighting in kitchen with LED downlighters - supply & fit £200-£300 2-3 hours

That's replacing existing, not installing new, and it doesn't give an amount.
It actually gives quite a fair account of general prices saying a customer should expect to pay £150-£200 a day depending on location.

Also had a look at the site. They seem very fair in the electrical section quoting £150 per day labour for a sparks - I'd be happy with that for domestic, so long as the job was straight forward.

Hum ............. not in Surrey.

All these "sites" have the same issues ........... they take NO ACCOUNT of location ....... and as we all know there are quite large regional variations

I think a lot of it is an older generation thing. My old man thinks £50 for a days work is expensive. I keep telling him for any decent tradesman you’re looking at £200 a day. I just had a plasterer in for best part of 4 days. Made good and skimmed two walls of bedroom and fitted and skimmed two outer walls with insulated plaster board. The guy worked his socks off (only drank water) .. bit weird but did a cracking job. £1100.00 all in. Came via recommendation and there’ll be more work coming his way.

London prices are different, tradesmen have to add the cost of parking to the bill, £10 t0 £30 per day.

£150 for a day's work before deduction wouldn't get me out of bed. All the usual overheads such as daily running costs, tax, national insurance, time/travel actually quoting for the job, time/travel getting the parts all for equivalent of Aldi shelf filler money, but with no paid leave, sick pay, guaranteed regular income or pension contribution.

A decent customer of mine recently had a ceiling skimmed. The room is around 11' x 12.' He got a few quotes and said they all came in at around £325-£375, which I thought was really expensive (clearly I'm out of touch). The guy that did it apparently spoke very little English and was in and out within 4 hours. In fairness he did a good job, but I doubt he used more than £20 of materials.

I don't plan to become a plasterer (I probably would be rubbish at it anyway), but I would love to earn that sort of money for half a day's work.

As for the idiots who try to barter with me I just don't entertain them.

It's becoming increasingly difficult up here in Glasgow to get even £150 a day in the saturated domestic market.

I'm having to compete with twenty-something boys who are doing consumer unit changeovers for £185, EICRs for £40-£60 (even though most of them have no qualifications in inspection and testing) and rewires of three-bedroom houses for £1800.

I just can't see how it is possible for a legitimate business to be profitable when it is charging its customers pocket-money prices. I can therefore only conclude that I'm competing against illegitimate businesses. I'm sure HMRC would have a bonanza if they were to ever investigate these charlatans.
