Hello everybody! I have a question regarding downlights installation. Is there any rules that applyes for how manu lights should be in the bathroom? I found out that when installing downlihts there should be 1 meter from the wall, and 1 meter distance between lights. Is that rules correct? Please point me on the right direction. Many thanks.

none for me. a globe lamp with bc bulb will do.

customers usually think in a different way and its usually between 2 and 8....

I suppose every one has there own way of doing it but as a rule of thumb I divide the square area of the ceiling (in metres) by 1.9 to calculate the number of downlights required. obviously an area like a kitchen could be different due to wall cupboards, etc.

Your 1 m method is probably OK for most situations, but perhaps down to 0.5m from the walls if possible, however it is important to know what lighting effect is required by the customer.
They may want nice and bright or dim and cosy.
You may want to have different areas of accent lighting, loads of choice.
But for lighting a room (I would normally say do not use downlights as they are rubbish, but I am against most customers wishes!) then keeping a constant spacing around each downlight: so if you think the downlight will light out to 600 mm then the downlight spacing would be 1200mm apart and 600mm from a wall.

i've got a nifty little chart with the room width down the left and the length across the top. where they intersect it give me the number of downlights and the lux level at the floor. i reckon it assumes a ceiling height of 8ft.

Surely intersection points and lux levels would depend on beam angle and lumen output. I have seen charts like this before... But only product specific.

Put them where you want them I say! I recently put some approx 150mm from a wall for accent lighting and they look spot on.. Normally would not put them any closer than around 0.5m from a wall as someone suggested. One thing is if the walls are poorly painted, skimmed or finished, then every defect will be highlighted and can look awful.

Other than that, around 1.0 to 1.2m spacing is usually ok IMO.

pale i know you like charts so ive sent you one in pm [emoji6]

to be honest its usually the customer asks for so many spots and we offer advice saying its either too many or not enough and offer our opinion.

opinions are like ****holes everyone has one
