If it's naff then it's too steep. Make it shallower. You learn from practice, watch a couple YouTube videos for a handy way to do it.
I struggle with sharpening tools too. I did try looking up how to do my chisels it properly but i didn't find much that helped me.

This lansky blade medic is a great addition to the tool box if you use a knife. A few passes every now and again will keep it sharp, will take out minor damage and restore the edge.

Also you can get a honing guide for chisels that will keep the correct angle on a whetstone.
I don't know, but it took a session to get the angles on five chisels right, then just an occasional touch-up as required. No real signs of wear.How long do those sharpening pads last? I've tended to steer clear of them because I'm just not sure of their durability compared with say a decent whetstone.

I bought a pair as well came in handy for stripping the cable when I had to fit a newer set of lights to the youngest E30.Got home and look what was waiting, it's like Christmas !!!
I'm up a ladder fixing security lights tomorrow and I know who will be on the team
