Hello,

I have been trying to find out the answer to a seemingly simple question - Does a Cafe require by law to have smoke detectors or a fire alarm?

Any help much appreciated!!

Daniel

the answer to this lies with the local council. they will tell you what, if anything, they require for the property in question.

OK thanks. Out of curiosity have you ever installed smoke detectors on a very high ceiling? Its about 18 feet or so. Just wondering if excepying future access issues there are any special considerations for such high ceilings.

18 feet! that's not a ceiling, it's the sky.

Fitted detectors on ceilings higher than that but choosing the right detectors and siting them correctly is essential

With regard to the OP what does the fire risk assessment for the building say and how does it meet the requirements of The Fire Regulatory Reform Order 2005

As stated, a risk assessment of the premises is manatory first of all.
Max height guidline for smoke detectors is 10m.
Being commercial premises a full BS 5839 part 1 system would be needed to a minimum of L3 ,assessment and fire officer may insist on L1. Which I would see being put forward.
