Hi guys

A friend has asked me if I'd be able to move a fire alarm detector for him. He's getting rid of current suspended ceiling so it only needs to go up a couple of feet. What do I need to do to do this properly/safely? Is it as easy as turning off the mains, removing battery and then undoing wiring and wiring up exactly the same in new position? Don't really fancy the fire brigade showing up because I've opened the circuit....
I'll be using fire rated clips/conduit

Thanks

can you not remove the head and refix the base without disturbing the wiring. then refit head?

yes it basically is as easy as that ,you would need to test it afterwards and make sure it does not have a direct line to the fire brigade but if your not sure what your doing i wouldn't touch it as if your the last person touch it and theres a fire and it doesnt go off , you will end up getting the blame

Would my mate know if it has a direct line to the fire brigade? I haven't actually seen the job yet. What's the best testing procedure? Smoke spray and then reset the alarm? Thanks guys

removing the head would only sound the fault buzzer.

if this is a conventional fire alarm with control panel, then you will need to know which is the incoming zone cable and which is the out, otherwise you will disable the head removal feature.
1. disabled the zone on panel
2. remove old detector and wiring.
3. if extending use metal beza boxes, and crimp new cables.
4. when refitting detector base, test which set of cables is the incoming zone, should be 24-28v
5. connected base correctly, with zone in/out
6 test zone and detector

Cheers guys. Hoping to be able to do what telectrix advised as it seems the easiest route, but upon failing that will follow all other advice. Many thanks all!
