Hi All,

Thought, I should work on a weekly or bi-weekly forum blog on my work through the EAL L2 Dip in Elec Installations course.

I have been posting or trying to post on a regular basis, so thought, why not committ and do a weekly/bi-weekly post, where all trainees can join in and add to their weekly work. Hopefully some can help others on their weekly journey.

2 nights, 1 night class, 1 night pracs!

My aim to get help and advice on this foru-blog on my weekly works!

Currently to get everyone up to date on my progress

Just finished my first exam last week and section ELEC2/01 Health and Safety is now complete.

MY GRADE PASS - 80%

Over the moon with that!

My view on the exam, hated it as the format of the questions were nothing like the past papers I did, totally different. I ended up going over the paper twice and changing 3 answers.

In the end, glad H&S is over and now onto

ELEC2-08 Electrical Science Principles and with my first learning outcome 1 class tonight. And its Ohms law and resistance in series!

PRACS - nearing finished 3 way light swtiching with intermendiate (sign off tomorrow) and already started working on the cable tray and going to start on armour cable tomorrow night.

Any help on working on cable try and armour cable will be a great help!

Finally No exams answers on the thread, as that will be cheating/telling!

Good luck everyone and another update to follow.

best advice for tray and SWA is measure twice, cut once. and practice on some scrap before tackling the real thing.

On EAL myself, however we are only in one day a week.

Did my Health and Safety exam myself. got 20/25 (80%) questions. I too found the exam wording to be the strangest part. I read though the EAL book chapter on H&S about twice and was getting 100% on the book questions and practice papers my tutor handed out.

What annoyed me the most is that you could sit the exam with zero knowledge on H&S and still pass. Kinda made studying a bit pointless.

I have an exam tomorrow on environmental technologies (Solar PV, Rain water harvesting that kinda thing) then we start on science in the new year.

On the practical side of things we finished our 3-way intermediate switching (wired in singles though PVC conduit) Next is T+E using switching lines and the rest of house wiring.

I'm kinda a little disappointed so far with the pace of the course. During class we honestly do very little.

No way, has it been 5 months!!!!

Right then, a quick catch up.

I was meant to write on a weekly or so basis and update everyone on my progress, but the covid shutdown and distance leaning and can't go to college saw a end to that!

Fast forward a few months to March/April, the college opened up to - Book a session only in the workshop to get your pracs up to date and catch up to finish the course!

So over 5 weeks from March to April, I was going in daytimes a couple of hours at a time to catch up to finish 10 pracs to finish the level 2.

So, That was for the EAL - Elec2/05B (craft skills) 2-05B1 to 2-05B10. I had already done about 3 up to Xmas and I can now confirm, I have completed all my pracs as listed on the worksheets 1-10. Just need to tidy up the write ups for them to be marked up and completed for good.

The theory on other hands - after getting back to college Mid April - the college has fast forwarded through all the exams and I will be finishing the last exam sitting next week, which will be onsite guide paper or chapter 3 EAL book (L2) - theory and tech section. The worse section, I think as I can't get my head around - take a book into the exam with you. Mock I did get 60% and took me the full time allowed to answer the last question in the nick of time! Just need to do that one more time now and will be glad to get rid of that exam.

But overall, all other sitting exams I am hovering around the 68-80% passmarks. This final paper, I am taking the advice of the lecturers, pass it, move on, you wont get a f******* medal for passing or getting 100% for it. I guess they are under pressure to pass everyone and move on.

The college has managed to get everyone back to a near finish level, I just have a couple of bits left to do and I will be hoping to be put forward to the level 3, which start in Sept for 2 nights again.

I hope, I have bought everyone up to date

Just need to get my head around the onsite guide - so, will start searching for some extra help guides on here on how to use it best to pass!

Good luck everyone and another update to follow.

Fingers crossed for you squire. Level 3 is pretty much calculations, a design project, inspection & testing and more on the regs.....from a C&G standpoint anyway

Well done lad! First year is almost over (for me and you both) hopefully in your second year you'll get a wee pay rise. :)

Covid has been a real pain. I've been doing distance learning too through college.

Seems like you've done a lot more than me in college. We don't even do any practical tests or anything. I'm back in next Monday for an exam and have to just my assignment then that's me done for the year. I'm hoping level 3 next year we will actually do something.

Cheers Lister, I am guessing, it will be the same for the EAL. Hopefully I can get the level 3 book off the college and have a look at it.

I did buy the level 2 book then found out after, you can get these free from the college, if you signed up to the EAL course, but the college did let me borrow 'their' level 2 book, which I used for the year.

Hopefully I will get one for level 3 to look at before the next course starts

Yeah, I think, we got lucky to do all the pracs from pvc to metal conduits to steel trays and other wiring and simple testing. This is the part I like best and can't wait to do more of that side.

The paperwork side, I know it needs doing, I am ok with it, some parts are just plain boring, but overall once you go through it, the pracs make more sense.

We have completed the pracs before learning all the theory. Wish it was the other way round, but it does make sense!

Hopefully, get our final results sooner than later, so we can start the level 3 enrollment.

I found the (C&G) books invaluable, they filled some of the gaps that were in the lecturers teaching style, same with making a test rig; being able to test at home and get an appreciation for the sequence of tests and what each does for the each helps massively.

Then of course there all the CPD I was doing off my own back with the COVID webinars from various sources and watching YT vids on how to do some of the practical elements and copy along with them also helped.

I'm working on a cable calculation generate (spits out random Ib In Iz It and you have to work through the design calculations to say whether that combination results in a compliant circuit or not, and if not, how to make it comply.

The polar opposite of a calculator if you will.

Brill stuff, I watched a few vids to help me with my pracs and they did help as in college due to the time constraints we had to get on with it, ok we did get help, but was keen to get on with the job myself.

The manshed is nearly complete and hope to have it up and running by the summer. The plan is to put a CU in there with some electrics. Add a bench and I will be able to have a small setup in there to work on mini projects over the summer months.

I have been meaning to watch some webinars, but still got other bits on which keep me busy (including 2 school runs at 2 juncs at different times)!

Defo something I will add before I get onto the L3.

Design cal generator - sounds like fun. I am going to look more into L3, once I get this month and half out of the way. Will find out from the college what pracs are need for the EAL L3 and try to get a head start in the summer on those and hopefully it will give me a head start on the L3 as I think the theory is going to take alot of my time!

Most practicals will be test and inspect, instead of assembly and Installation; kind of follows on on the process; you've put something in, now to test it and verify it meets 7671 requirements

Right chaps, latest update from last week.

I have passed the onsite guide test paper or chapter 3 EAL book (L2) to finish the 4 main exams for this Level 2.

68% and I was happy with that as this was the hardest paper, I have done ( being open book). I don't like open book!

So, just have a mechanics test paper to do - another open book! A transformers assessment (not sure, what that is) and hand in my writeups, oh the safe isolation (was left due to covid) assessment!

So, once all those are done in coming 2-3 weeks, I am all done.

I have passed all the main exam papers (high 60s to 80s), so hopefully enough marks there to help towards a good pass.

I shall update further after this week is over!

Cheers

Right chaps, another update,

Safe Isolation and Transformers (reading from 2 small transformers and put into the NpNs IpIs formula) all done and and passed.

So I have now finished all the exams and pracs for Level 2.

I just need to finish the write ups for the pracs (a couple to tidy up) and I am all done.

I am applying for the EAL Level 3 version as the Lecturer say and I expected to pass the year.

Great news, I guess
