hi all.

I got priced out of a rewire last week by about £390.00

It was a 3 bed semi about 25 miles away from my base.

I went in at £2190 for all of the following:

They had 5 d/skts in lounge, 3 in dining, 5 in kitchen, 1 hall way,3 conservatory
1 landing, 3 in main bed, 3 in 2nd bed and 2 in 3rd bed
total 26 d/skts

All with pendants in each room with with 1 way switches apart from 2way for landing

1x ip rated globe in bathroom,

2 x batten holders in kitchen,

1x cooker point

1x shower point

new 10 way board with tails/earthing

all niceic tesed and certified?

does any one think my price is dear?

sounds very reasonable to me. is the " family friend " competent to certify?

keep an eye open. if he's not registered, they will have to notify LABC and pay their fat fee on top. you, of course would not grass them to LABC . NOT.

how it is these days i did a quote for a 3 bed house £3500.00 some other guy turned up and gave a quote of £1500 didnt get the job parts alone cost more than that !!!!!

Sounds like it was a case of "I'll do it for £1800 mate"!!!

I'd have been closer to £2500 myself.

You don't say where you are but I'd say you were too cheap.

If someone else is offering to do it for £1800 and the customer is happy you're probably better off without the job

I'd be looking for £3000 or so for a job like that so another vote for far too cheap i'm afraid. Had the same thing happen to be last year though, similar sort of job, total quoted was £3300 then they had a family friend do it because he'd recently been made redundant. Don't even think they got him to quote for it either which really ticked me off!

Let the other feller do it,, how he can supply all the materials and labour for that !!!
Must be signing on and working on the side

dont know if its just me but there is an awful lot of well i got a friend to do it ,mate of mine did it , friend of ours did it ,at the mo who's going to stop them , and talk about doing it cheap we dont stand a chance inform the council, they could'nt give a monkeys

Id say far too cheap!
The other guy must be either desperate for work, willing to work for love or fro reddies.

I always quote at £40 per outlet (socket, switch, light etc ) which in your case would be £1800.

£100 each for the cooker and shower

£300 for new board with tails, earthing and bonding.

Mileage on top plus time to complete certificate and notify.

My price would have been around the £2400 mark so you maybe are slightly too cheap but then again depends where you live.

Telectrix is in the right ball park. Your'e quote is a bit cheap. Is the bloke who has undercut you getting paid in Zlottys by any chance.
If he is, then tomorrow morning he will be in screwfix car park looking for a Sparky to ask "How do i wire up house". Search for my post "Why do i spend £500" if you dont see where i am coming from.

Cheers......Howard

remember it well. what he should do is inform LABC that the house is being rewired. i.e. give notice. then stand back and watch the brown stuff fly when they find it's going to cost em another £300+

the way i see it is they just want a quote so they can see if its inline with what they are already getting it done for.

can you not charge a call out fee at least for the quote or is there anyway round this , as we all know its happening to much??

could be a spark getting the gear free,ie from work, you got no chance quoting against that.its just beer money to him then.

The trap you don't want to fall into is worrying about being under cut by other 'sparkies'.

End of the day the work they do for the price they give will not be of a very good standard. They are going to have to use low budget accessories and rush the job to make it worthwhile doing it to make a living off it.

This works for so long but they wont get the recommendations that you will get by quoting at the right price, not rushing and doing the job properly.

You just need to stick to your guns and reap the rewards of future recommendations.
