Had a call from an estate agents on Friday asking how much for a PIR I quoted £95 + VAT on the hope £30 less than I normally do, they booked the job and all set for Thursday this week.

Now comes the best bit.......

I had a call today from the Estate Agents saying they had been quoted by another electrician in the area £30 inclusive, when I explained what a PIR entailed and how much work is involved they have the cheek to then say "Well if you can match the other guy you can still have the job"........

My response was the best......

"If the other guy can spend 3-4hours testing and giving you a full in depth report for £30 my advice is use the other guy (who they wouldn't say who he was), however you know my rates and they are non-negotiable as I had already explained I normally charge £125."

£30 not bad for 10mins form filling! seriously though, how can this guy get away with this?

It annoys me as that means he is working for less than £10 per hour

not taking into account his insurance premiums, diesel, tool maintenance

oh hang on cowboys don't have insurance to pay do they

are you sure he's doing a PIR, or just looking to see if the CU is screwed on the wall?????

We're probably back to the Domestic Visual Condition Report again!

The best you can do is in future, ask if you can see the final report 'so you can see how you can give them a better deal' then you can explain what they really got for the £30.00. Makes you sick!

it really does, I only do a Domestic Visual Condition Report in between the PIR, but only after I have carried out a FULL PIR.

I just cannot believe that Estate Agents believe this is satisfactory surely something should be able to be done about this

is it because estate agents are all related to john wayne and assume all cowboys are the same?

I will only do a visual PIR on rented properties that have had a change of tenant and only if i have carried out a PIR and all remidials and installation is not 50 years old , still get the meter out and carry out a few tests and it would be more tha £30 , had one a few years ago slagging me off saying i was a money grabber , funny thing was i changed the CDU in his house because he wasnt qualified to do it , so im my eyes how could he do PIRs or as they put it landlords safety certificates ,,oh he worked for gas elec by the way , the reports he issued were not worth the paper they were written on , i may well have a copy ill try and find it

I do hope something goes wrong and an Estate Agent/Landlord takes the full brunt for commissioning a report based on cost, because they can be caught up on vacarious liability!!!! Although they did not carry out the testing, they did choose the contractor/tradesman, because I know similar has happened in other fields of the engineering field. Feel sory for the poor sod who gets hurt, however this stupid pricing will only continue until there is a big court case!!!
