First thanks in advance
I have question about a ac unit. I replaced a window unit that was wired for 240 with a 20 amp plug. New unit is 240 with a 30 amp plug. Checked the wire that was installed and its 12 awg so I didnt want to run a 30 amp breaker on that 12 awg. I installed the 30 plug on the 12 awg but left the 20 amp breaker in the box. My thought was if the unit pulls more then 20 amps it should trip correct? I started the unit (its brand new 28,000 btu) and it runs like a top. The side panel on the unit says 13.5/15.0 amps. Is this ok for a short time until I can get someone out to replace the 12 awg with 10 awg and install the 30 amp breaker? I dont plan to run it much but we are going through a hot spell for a couple days. Am I safe to assume it wont overload the wire since I left the 20 amp breaker in the box? This wire is dedicated to only the ac unit

Thank you very much
Terry

Terry please don’t run that AC very much because it take a lot of power for the compressor when it kicks off and on the breaker might not be tripping right now you are causing heat in the wire and receptacle because I bet you the actual receptacle is just rated for 15 amps. If you must run foot for short periods of time and feel the receptacle to see if it getting warm. Be careful that could cause a fire.
