any ideals on why it said trip i have a megger mft 1553. testing between live earth and nutral with lead test. but dont work lol

any help will be great thanks .
 
probably because your putting a fault current of around 20amps on a 6a breaker either step up the breaker just for the test or use r1+r2+ze
 
no i use a no trip witch put i think 10amps thru it ok il just do the maths lol thnaks for ur help.. also i take it ur a expericnece spark can u help with a few more testing Qs??

well u say that... some people do not.

all it was is i tested a rcd to day i got a reading of 18.1ms i think on 1sec and reading of 4.9ms on x5 can u help with the mas tripping times?
 
RE: Zs trip reading - ensure you have a good connection on the contacts when carrying out the test. If any of your probes lose contact for a moment the meter will read trip. If you are using a croc clip to connect the earth test lead, make sure this is clamping firmly.
 
what mass tripping times if your rcd is rated at 30ma 1x rated rated current =18ms=fine 5xrated current=5ms=fine = no mass tripping

Never EVER use a higher rated MCB. If your meter doesn't have a No Trip EFLI setting (which his Megger MFT1553 DOES have) then it should be calculated (i.e. Zs=Ze+(R1+R2)).

Loop test is around 26A I think. No trip is around 15mA (not 10A).

This tripping problem has come up many times with the Megger1552 and 1553s. It's worth considering that there may be a design fault.

Anyone interested just search the forum for similar posts.

I have to agree with JulianC, I have found on many occasions that if the probes have a bad connection that the meter shows fail..

Yes it only takes 1 probe to lose connection for a split second to get a trip display.
 
I've had it also many times, apparantly randomly, it's getting to be a bit of a P.I.T.A. I've always made sure the connections are good, and still it randomly occurs. I do the Zs by calc when it does happen now.

I must admit that I wasn't aware that a split second disconnect could lose the test though.
 
cheers for that every one just bit strage had it happen few time and wondered what was going on i use my cals to do Zs but stil wanted to no y it happend cheers
 
As previously mentioned ,during a no-trip test, a momentary break in either the neutral or earth connection will cause "trp" to be displayed as the MFT assumes an interruption in supply.

A poor connection in the circuit cpc can also cause this issue.
