Morning all

After some advice please, thank you.

I've installed a 40amp submain for a garage supply, wired in SWA and have exported the PME (tin hat on)

30ma RCD in house, main switch in garage cu.

All good until customer tells me that they're having a a car charger installed.

New regs stipulate this must be on TT system.

So off we are today to change it all over. Move RCD to garage and bang a rod in.

One question which I think I know the answer to, is that the nice newly installed metal garage cu now has to be changed to plastic? Am I correct.

Thanks Sy

I would suggest you red BS7671 Section 722 Sy and not listen to your customer, who obviously has been miss informed.

What may I ask is your reasoning behind that statement ?

Here's you go : 722.411.4.1

And haven't had to install any TT for a very long time, hence the question.

Cheers Sy

Cheers Sy

if you read on it says "The requirements of this regulation need not be applied for the charging point at a dwelling...."

So is the charging point outside? if so move inside the garage!

It's going inside garage....BMW sparky installing next week, but require an earth stake.

Garage in block located 10m away from property.

BMW fitted charger at friends house, detached garage, no stake

I have only ever had one instance where a customer insisted that something be TT'd.
It was for a laser cutting machine from China.
The cutter wasn't working correctly, and the Chinese were worried that the earth wasn't up to scratch.
Eventually they got their landlord to drill through the slab (and any DPC if installed) and install a rod, which I then connected to the machine.
Eventually the Chinese sent someone over to re-program the cutter.

TT'd it in the end....

Keeps customer happy otherwise they wouldn't have fitted his charger and learnt something for just in case next time.

Apparently BMW sub the job out to Schneider, who sub to a local firm.
