Barrel monitor function

Could someone explain it point me in the right direction as to the function of a barrel monitor on an EOT crane?

Do you mean the barrel of the hoist?

A quick google suggests it’s some sort of coupling on a crane/hoist.

So maybe a heat, wear or rotation sensor of some kind.
