Hello,

I would like to do a course that gives me a basic understanding of electricity and how it works. I don't want to become an electrician right now but would like any course I do to be useful in the future in case I decide that becoming a qualified electrician might be useful. Could anyone recommend me such a course please? I was thinking of doing a basic City & Guilds, would that be roughly the right route to take?

Ohm has a university? Erlangen isn't practical for me though...

Thanks for the book suggestions Archy, I'll take a look.

Maybe some background would help, I am thinking of making a career change and fancy doing something with smart home/home automation but feel at least a basic knowledge of electricity and electrical installation would help. Could anyone help?

stick around on the forum. in time you should pick up AMPle knowledge

How are your IT skills? I'd say that the electrics and IT go very much hand in hand when looking at home automation.
