Went to look at a job today, thought i was onto a winner when the lady said british gas had quoted between 2 & 3k. Lady bas lovely granite splashbacks worth megger money. British gas had been out and told her she needed new cables from cu to kitchen sockets, which ment cutting through all her granite. Lucky she called me. Symptoms were when she was using a lot of items in the kitchen mcb would trip. Checked cu, 16a breaker for kitchen ring!! Changed for 32a, test of ring all sorted. How can british gas get away with something like this????

Because the dick that put it in did not have a 32A unlike today when you buy a Wylex there is too many 32A so look out for a 16A on a 32A I have found 2 so far and yes I have had a few BG said calls plus no chance of me charging less for a rewire as I don't do them

We could oldtimer

Does building control in Scotland like you to be niceic .. Il start a different thread on procedures in Scotland , but for first year will probably work for someone else..

Went to a female pensioner yesterday to price for a cu change.
Asked why she wanted to change a perfectly good late 1980's early 90's cu & all MEB's were in 10mm and in place.

"British gas did a check and said it was old so needed changing, if I was to sell the house by law I would have to have it changed"

Blatant lie from BG, I told her to complain to BG & watch dog. Did the same with a customer last month who was told by BG spark the lighting circuit was dangerous & needs rewiring, only needed a short loop section replacing due to rodent damage (FP used for the fix), they did email the watch dog program.

Out of curiosity why use FP? Surely its no more resistant to little teeth than t+e?

They sent me a free energy monitor and I wasn't even a customer!....... OK that's the only good thing you'll hear!!!!

An energy monitor???

No good sending one of those to me these days ............... it would lead a very boring existence. :dozey::sad_smile:

VERY similar to an old lady well into her 80s down our street that I did bits & pieces for.

She was told she needed a rewire urgently as the place was in danger of catching fire.

I had a looksee and yes, it was "dated" but not dangerous as BG stated. I told her not to worry as it would outlast her.

She died about six weeks later ...............

(didn't leave me anything in her Will either!!)

I don't think they monitor the energy usage of an old fart!

Tell you what bonny lad .. if they measured the energy behind some of this old fart's farts they'd see some pretty impressive figures !!

Tidyboiler thinks I should make a profession out of it and she wants to be my manager.

Has anyone rang british gas and complained??? I was fuming the other day.
got asked to do a cu change by a lovely older couple. Ok. Brought the stuff went over to do it. Had a closer look that when I was there before...board was no more than 10-15 years old. So I asked...they had had british gas around a couple times, once to change a broken pullcord (I assume they have response callout thing) and another time to upgrade meter. British gas had put the fear of god into them about how there fuseboard was unsafe etc etc...absolute fuming. So I did a few tests to be sure. To the lighting and ring circuits and sat customers down and explained its fine as is, dated but fine. All tests good, yea some sockets were tapped on but still ok. Told them they could be looking at a total rewire in 10+ years (my way of saying when you die) Gave them the choice and they chose not to.

British gas are cowboys in my opinion and need dropping. I still want to ring and rant now!!!!

We've had similar where a customer has had a simple fault with a pendant and is told buy BG that the electrics are unsafe. Did a PIR (yes it was a PIR as a couple of years ago) and to be honest the installation was a work of art, the neatest thing you've ever seen.

Just out of interest, does anyone have anything GOOD to say about British Gas? I don't personally....

As a bloke who has subbed for them installing complete heating systems, I can say the money paid to me was good but that's all.

I packed it in because of the low standard of work they wanted me to work to and the way they were ripping-off the customers.

British Grasp are a company to be avoided at all costs as far as I'm concerned.

I wonder if there's a bit of jealousy on here regarding british gas, or british grasp as we call them, don't you wish that you were all so skilled that you could decide what needs rewiring with just a socket tester and a quick glance :mad2: a lot of the crap I,ve seen them dream up makes me wonder why we need MFT's if such a major decision as to rewire can be made with just a socket tester, and a basic one at that.BG are just a bunch of scaremongering robbers who prey on the old and the weak!

Geordie, been there done it,some of the crap they want I wouldn't put in my dog kennel,oh and their prices are a bargain too! not.

There was someone on a couple of weeks ago singing their praises but he had just got a start with them so the rose tinted glasses were new and I think he wanted to be assimilated

Similar story, my sons child minder had a quote of £5.5K for re-wire and new CU! I told her I would do a PIR(2010) first. The CU and wiring was only 12 years old. Yes, she had a few items that needing addressing but never in a million years was it a £5k re-wire.
