So it's official now. Whereas you used to be able to say - with not a little pride .... "I'm an electrician" the government approved terminology is now "competent person".

Son, what do you want to be when you grow up? A competent person? That'll impress your friends!

I will never ever describe myself as a competent person (electrical). If anyone asks what I do for a living they'll get the answer "I'm an electrician" I worked bloody hard to earn the right to call myself that and I'll continue to do so.
This is yet more validation of the idiotic short route to supposed full ability.

Why is this trade so less thought of why have the government made a big thing about gas but think so little about us

anyone can become an electrician now go work in someone's house and could kill somebody what will it take for this trade to be taken seriously again

is it the government or trainers causing this

Both, the government allowed the schemes to bring in the ridiculousness of the Electrical Trainee and they made hay while the sun shone. However the biggest ones to blame are.....

ELECTRICIANS!

The schemes exist because they are allowed to. If they were boycotted, as I've been advocating for months, they'd be history inside a year.

NVQ 3 is still only a supplementary qualification when all said and done, just having a practical skill set, still doesn't make you an electrician, or in real terms, electrically ''Competent''!!

Competence is relative to the branch of the trade you’re in.

I would never class myself as competent in the domestic sector. I don’t consider I have the experience.

Allow the scams to set the level of competence and it’s doomed to failure. Nor would I trust either the IET or JIB.

As Trev has said, you’ve brought it on yourselves by dancing to the various scams tune.
(Makes a bit of a mockery of the old adage, “he who pays the piper calls the tune”)

It’s got absolutely nothing to do with me, through you lot I seem to have been dragged in to the argument. I would encourage a boycott of the scams.
