Hi folks,

You can read a heck of a lot about career changers in the press and on training websites but has anyone on this forum done it for real?
I am part way through one of the electrical training provider courses and could just do with some words of wisdom from those who have perhaps already done this successfully - any advice would be most appreciated so if you feel like sharing some of your own experiences with me I'd be grateful.

Many Thanks.

Hi Blimeyme,

I was a IT engineer/support manager for 30 years until 18 months ago when i got made redundant for the 3rd time in 5 years. Since then i have worked as a self employed Domestic Electrician ( i already went to night school to get my Part P and 17th Edition qualifications ) and haven't looked back. Have never been out of work in the last 18 months and am even turning work down. Go for it,

Barry

Hi Blimeyme.
Can't really offer you much advice as I'm also currently training myself. Good look though and all the best! :)

Thanks for the reply, it is really great to get a real success story as setting up on your own is a tad scarey! You have helped me to 'keep the faith' which is exactly what I had hoped for.

Thanks again.

Hi bwm730 is really nice to hear you doing well. i would like some advise please as i am looking to do an electrician course
i am a chef at the moment so i have no experience whatsoever in electrical field.and advise would be greatly appreciated
as i don't want to be ripped off by some companies who provide electrician courses and then after i finish the course
feel like not learned a lot many thanks luca

hi manda i am looking to do an electrician course myself but have no clue where to start
i see this companies in internet who provide electrician courses but i am a bit sceptical about it
as i don't want to pay a lot of money for the course and then feel i did not get value for money
any advise you could offer would great thanks

I served my apprenticeship, then left the trade to join the airforce. When i left the airforce I done a short course to refresh my memory and catch up on the regs.

Absolute waste of time, the tutor knew F*** all and was a gas fitter by trade.

And to name and shame em...... It was Hybrid (Aintree)

Similar to BMW370 I was a senior computer engineer for 12 years, then got sick of the stress of it all and jacked it in to start an electrical apprenticeship at the age of 35, which was quite funny as I am older than one of my college lecturers! Anyway, I don't regret it for a moment, and don't miss stupid computers at all. Except for the money of course...

Ektoras: does your local further education college not offer day-release apprenticeship courses?

hi stroppy;the thing is i am working full time so any course that i take will have to be part time,
i don't mind paying privately i am 32 years old and i want to do the course for around 2 years and i think the apprenticeship course
will take around 3 years , could be wrong
