way to look at it is this. out of say £100 job you dont really make the £100 as if you put it through the books and take off taxe, expenses etc you might be left with say £65.00. so saved £35.00 a cash job unless you have no materials and were not working anyway is really only bringing in £35 gain. longer term those £35 bits add up and a few grand a year can have a big impact on mortgages and lending etc... I put it through the books now as my accountant can find ways to reduce my taxes in a legit manner. there is as others said no need or real benefit to doing undeclared cash jobs.

It's also the same with contractors who try and buy materials or pay for van repairs etc for cash, they think they are getting a bargain when in fact they would be better claiming it back through the business.

They may all be honest tradesman for all we know.
Some trades only deal in cash, market traders, burger Van's mobile car cleaners/ valeters, mobile hairdressers and the list goes on but it doesnt make them all bent.
Do they declare it all, possibly not but they will probably declare most of it.

More likely the majority of "honest" ones will declare just enough so they have to pay a small amount of tax to avoid standing out as a non tax payer. Some won't care and dodge tax altogether and the minority will declare it all, people who are looking to apply for a mortgage or other loan where a higher declared income benefits their cause would be in this minority.
