As a newly qualified sparky friends and family are asking me to do all sorts of little jobs. And as for my mother she would like me to install two extra storage heaters she has been given to the downstairs floor of her house. The question is how are these normally wired in and is there anything I should know about before attempting to tackle this job. Thanks for any advice

You say these are EXTRA storage heaters so will assume economy seven tarriff is available to you. If so you will have a seperate consumer unit that feeds the economy seven circuits. This board is usually time clock controlled dependant on the age of the original install so provided you have a couple of spare ways its a simple matter of installing radial circuits terminating in a 20 amp double pole switch at the storage heater locations, just make sure the installs max demand can cope

Hi, sorry to high jack the thread, but what is economy 7 all about, i have never heard of this, sorry if i seem dumb, just trying to learn as much as i can.

Economy 7 is a tarrif option from the supply authorities to provide cheap rate electricity to consumers between the hours of 12 midnight to 7 am the next morning. This cheaper electricity is then stored overnight in storge heaters which with the aid of electric elements transfer heat to fire bricks which surround them within the heater unit. This heat is then released during the day to provide background heating to the rooms served.
The main reason for the cheaper rate electricity being provided at night is that most industries are not pulling power from the grid during these hours However power stations are still running so it makes for an efficient way of providing cheap electric.
Hope this helps explain.;)

there is /was economy 10 also it has 0000-0700 & a 3hr boost during the day so 10hrs

Has Mark says, although not so popular. The breakdown for economy ten is,

3 hours in the afternoon
2 hours in the evening
5 hours over night

Although some suppliers cover this tarrif by,

3 hours in the early morning,
3 hours in the early afternoon
4 hours in the evening

Thanks guys for your replies, There are two meters and two cu's and she is billed two separate amounts. I will have to check for spare ways on consumer unit. The biggest problem is going to be routing the cables. lucky its summer therefore not in any hurry.

Thanks again
